Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 13 Ryzen 5
The smaller 13.5-inch model of the Surface Laptop 4 is now also available with an AMD Ryzen processor. Private customers, however, only get the base model with the Ryzen 5 and just 8 GB RAM. But is the AMD model perhaps still the better option?

Archive.org versionAs with the previous generation, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a very nice ultraportable laptop. It’s slim and light, looks great and the keyboard, touchpad and display are all superb. This is a laptop I’d be happy to own and use as my day-to-day machine for work. The key question is, however, does it do enough to overhaul the best in the business? My answer to that would have to be: not quite. With uninspiring GPU performance and middling battery life denting its appeal, even the switch to AMD and Intel CPUs across the range can’t drag it level with the M1 MacBook Air.

Archive.org versionIn an aggressive move, Microsoft has launched the Surface Laptop 4 in India with over 10 SKUs which are available on either the 11th Gen Intel Core processors or AMD Ryzen Mobile processors. I got my hands on the model with AMD Ryzen 5 4680U, which comes with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. It costs Rs 122,499 and is a great value proposition for people who are on the move. The battery life is solid on this one, and the display is decent. If you do not want the Surface Laptop 4, you can also look at the Dell XPS 13, which I have reviewed and is a great all-rounder machine. But it is also costly. Another alternative is the MacBook Air, which is available at a price less than that of the Surface Laptop 4.

Archive.org versionThe Surface Laptop 4 is a laptop that can be summed up in one word: adequate. In terms of raw performance, it has enough performance for just about anything you might want to do, but it isn’t going to be quite as fast as the latest Ryzen 5000 laptops. I guess it does have a lot more going for it in terms of user experience. Stuff like the adaptive brightness, comfortable keyboard, nice trackpad, and the Alcantara palm rest are definitely nice to have too. The long battery life and excellent display on the Surface Laptop 4 are also notable pluses that put the Surface Laptop 4 ahead of most of its peers. I would say that the clean design and Windows installation can be considered bonuses as well, but there are plenty of beautiful machines out there right now.

Archive.org versionSEA PC Mag, meanwhile, took the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 to a series of performance tests. While the laptop shows favorable results, it also becomes evident that it has some performance weaknesses, particularly on encoding files and gaming.
