First announced in 2021, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas VR has been put "on hold" for an indefinite amount of time. Meta confirmed this to IGN, and it's no good news for those who were waiting to play this GTA title on a virtual reality headset.

In the Facebook Connect event that took place in October 2021, Meta announced GTA San Andreas VR, generating excitement among Grand Theft Auto fans. After three years, the company has now confirmed that the project is "on hold indefinitely."

Moreover, on the trailer video of an upcoming Meta Quest game Behemoth uploaded on YouTube, the company responded to a comment saying that GTA San Andreas VR is on hold because the team is focusing on other projects. The official Quest VR YouTube account further noted that the company looks forward to working with Rockstar in the future.

During the announcement in 2021, Meta said that the project was already in the making for many years. The VR version of San Andreas was said to offer a "new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas." However, the company didn't share any screenshots or footage of the progress.

GTA San Andreas VR would have been the second virtual reality game from Rockstar Games. The developers previously released L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files in 2017 for the HTC Vive, and it was later released for PlayStation VR (PSVR2 available on Amazon) and Oculus Rift.

Returning to the recent comment by Meta on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas VR, the indefinite delay may actually mean the project has been abandoned. This wouldn't be a surprise, as Yahoo Finance reported earlier this month that Meta Reality Labs faced a $16 billion loss in 2023 from the VR-centric division.
