Mercedes-Benz EQE and EQS EVs rumoured to get 800v refresh with in-house motors and two-speed gearbox in 2025

Mercedes-Benz has long since announced its intention to move to an in-house motor for its electric vehicles. It seems that there is now a rumoured launch window for the marque's new motors, along with a laundry list of other tweaks to its electric EQE and EQS vehicle architectures, according to German publication JESMB.

The biggest alleged tweaks coming to Mercedes-Benz's updated EVA2M architecture are the inclusion of in-house-developed eATS 2.0 electric motors, a new 800-volt system, and the switch to a two-speed gearbox instead of the current one-speed one. The new gearbox is meant to be tuned for a combination of efficiency and torque delivery.

These changes would apply to both the EQE and EQS platforms, including SUV versions. This is no small feat for Mercedes-Benz and will require a substantial redesign of some of the underlying physical aspects of the EVA2 platform. The move from a 400-volt system to an 800-volt one has several benefits, but the most interesting to consumers will almost certainly be increased charging speeds.

After moving to an 800-volt system, Mercedes-Benz should be able to reach north of 200 kW charging speeds, which would be a substantial increase over the current 170 kW charging limit on many Mercedes-Benz EVs. Not only will charging speeds increase, but, since less heat is generated during charging, the car should be able to sustain a higher rate of charge for longer periods of time. This should, in turn, shorten charging stops for owners.
