Besides the first electric G-class SUV, Mercedes will launch a smaller and cheaper sibling dubbed the 'g-Class' as part of the quartet built on its new MMA platform for affordable EVs. The little G promises 'fun' AWD experience.

After Mercedes releases its EQG electric G-class SUV next year to what is likely to be a six-figure price, it will try and bring its famed offroader downmarket with a small, cheaper version. Dubbed the "g-Class" in a fun play of words, the compact electric SUV will retain the iconic boxy shape of the G-class, judging by an outline that Mercedes showed during its keynote presentation at the IAA Mobility 2023 expo.

The more affordable g-Class will start assembly in 2026, with a US release likely to follow in 2027, according to industry insider Sam Fiorani. According to the CEO of Mercedes, the "little G will be capable... it will be instantly recognizable, and it will be a lot of fun to drive - both on and off the road."

Electric Mercedes g-Class price and specs

When it announced its new EV platform, Mercedes teased that it will launch with a quartet of new vehicles. Besides the frugal CLA Classic with Tesla-beating range that will come first, there will also be a "shooting brake, and two stunning SUVs."

They are all meant as "gateway to the brand," or entry level electric cars meant to usher it into the era of cheaper EVs, like what Tesla is doing with the Model 3 Highland, or the rumored sub-$25,000 Model 2. Mercedes will probably try to set the new electric g-Class price under the US$80,000 threshold that makes it eligible for tax credit in the US, just as Tesla did recently with the Model X.

As for the electric g-Class specs, the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform promises 800V drivertrain, fast 250-miles-in-15-minutes charging, efficient silicon carbide inverters, and both affordable LFP or performance batteries with silicon-oxide anode, depending on the trim.

According to Mercedes, "the advanced next-generation drivetrain is scalable to fit other use cases, including in other vehicle segments... the modular design means it is also suitable for 4x4 vehicle applications," and the little g-Class may be the brand's first offroader to get it.
