The motto "better late than never" apparently applies to the Mecha Comet. We've previously reported on this modular handheld, and now there are new plans for the device, which arguably include both good and somewhat bad news. Specifically, the manufacturer has announced that the device will launch with significantly improved specs.
This affects virtually all important components, starting with the new NXP i.MX8M Plus chipset. The memory will have a capacity of 8GB instead of just 3GB. In terms of display, the Mecha Comet is going to sport a significantly sharper slightly larger 3.92-inch AMOLED panel with 1,080 x 1,240 pixels. Originally, the handheld was supposed to feature an LCD panel.
The Comet’s new specifications further include a PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot (2230/2242/3042), which should offer much better storage performance. M.2 modules with cellular connectivity are supported as well. Meanwhile, the USB port on the handheld can now be used for video output, and the battery capacity is set to increase to 4,000 mAh despite a reduced thickness of 0.55 inches.
The new specs are accompanied by a price increase of at least 15%, which means that the gaming system will be closer to $200 than the $160 that were advertised during the crowdfunding campaign. Deliveries are not expected until the 4th quarter of 2025. Last but not least, the Mecha Comet is still designed to be used with various modules, such as a keyboard or gamepad. A special Debian-based Linux distribution can also be used as the operating system.
