MSI Raider GE77 HX 12UHS: GeForce RTX 3080 Ti tops the charts
The MSI Raider GE77 HX 12UHS is among the most powerful 17.3-inch laptops. MSI uses a black chassis without any colorful accents to house the high-performance components. An LED strip, which can also switched off, allows for colorful customization. At the time of this article, the GE77 starts at around 3,000 USD. The high-end configuration we tested is available for around 5,200 USD.
With a Core i9-12900HX CPU, a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU (TGP 175 watts, 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM), and 64 GB of RAM (DDR4-4800, dual-channel mode), the system is suitable for all demanding use cases - video editing, rendering, 4K gaming. A blazing-fast PCIe4 SSD with a capacity of 2 TB serves as the system drive and ensures short loading times. There is also space for a secondary PCIe4 SSD.
The laptop can switch between Optimus or dGPU mode. The latter offers more graphics performance. In fact, this nets the GeForce GPU some of the best benchmark results we have been able to measure from this graphics chip thus far. Advanced Optimus is not supported. As a result, switching between the dGPU and Optimus modes requires a reboot.
The matte 4K screen (IPS, 120 Hz) offers a sufficient maximum brightness level, short response times, and a good color space coverage. The contrast could have been better, however. Although the laptop exhibits color accuracy issues ex-factory, it is possible to fix this by calibrating the display. Regardless: This is unacceptable on a laptop in this price category.
