Longstanding market leaders in terms of performance, Intel and Nvidia are increasingly experiencing pricing pressure. This is the "fault" of devices such as the MSI Bravo 15, which we have tested in its configuration with a Ryzen 7 4800H and a Radeon RX 5300M.

Although we were really excited during the tests of the Radeon RX 5300M, there was something that constantly put us off. Can you guess? Yep, the drivers. Every once and a while, and especially in the two Tomb Raider titles (the Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and the Rise of the Tomb Raider), an error popped up, explaining that our drivers have crashed. Unfortunately, this was the latest driver, downloaded from AMD’s page, and considering that this GPU isn’t exactly new, such issues should have been long fixed.

Bravo, all right! MSI's Bravo 15 (starts at $929; $999 as tested) is an all-AMD-powered gaming notebook and the successor of the Alpha 15. This time around, it more than compensates for its predecessor's lack of CPU grunt with a new "Renoir" Ryzen 4000 series chip, which is head and shoulders faster than comparable Intel silicon you'll find in laptops in this price range. Although the Bravo 15 falls a touch short in overall gaming performance next to notebooks packing Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, its strong CPU, ample memory, good-size dollop of storage, and a high-refresh AMD FreeSync display make it an excellent value at or just below the four-figure mark, where you'd be hard-pressed to find a GTX 1660 Ti-based notebook equipped the same.

At $900, the MSI Bravo 15 is a capable little machine. It’s competent rather than impressive, and workmanlike rather than innovative. But it plays games at respectable frame rates and runs productivity software for more than six hours on a single charge. It’s small enough to stash in a backpack comfortably, and the numpad on the keyboard is a nice touch. If you need high-end performance, you’ll have to dig deep for Razer Blade money. It’s also worth considering that the Bravo 15 is pushing its limits to run the latest and greatest games at 30 fps, which means it may not be the most future-proof system on the market. But it’s not often that you can find a gaming laptop with so few compromises for less than $1,000. If you’re a Sam’s Club member already, you may as well put that membership to good use.

It's acceptable that budget gaming laptops aren't going to give you the best graphics. However, you'll still want to avoid certain models due to an aging GPU with poor performance relative to most others in its price category.

The MSI Bravo 15 C7V is MSI’s answer to its own Katana series. It is really only Intel versus AMD situation here because the laptops are pretty identical. One thing that the Intel CPU excels at is simply performance. In both Gaming and computational loads, the Katana 15 outperforms its MSI Bravo cousin (even by little). Actually, the gaming performance is higher with the Intel machine only in low and medium graphics settings – a situation where the CPU needs to work harder in order to process all of the frames. It’s worth mentioning that like the Katana, the Bravo 15 C7V has a MUX switch, which was set at dGPU only mode for the performance tests. So, how about the port selection? Well, generally, it is good, because now the USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 1) port features DisplayPort output. However, it is not a Thunderbolt 4 connector, and you won’t be able to use SD cards natively on this device. We’ve covered the external ports, now let’s mention the internal ones. There are two SODIMM slots, which support up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM in total.

MSI has done a good job with the Bravo 15 C7U. The hardware platform here is the smart choice when it comes to price / performance ratio. The refreshed Zen 3+ CPUs are still powerful enough for modern games and even for photo and video editing if the cooling solution is good (like the one in this machine). In addition, these chips are quite efficient – the battery of our laptop has a modest capacity of just 53.5Wh but its juice is enough for 7 hours and 42 minutes of Web browsing or 7 hours and 9 minutes of video playback. The GeForce RTX 3050 (Laptop, 75W, 6GB) is kind of a new video card that we start to see a bit often in 2023. Despite the 96-bit bus, the increased TMU and shader count compared to the 4GB version of the RTX 3050 leads to good gaming performance.

74.08%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
