The Punkt. MC03 according to the manufacturer, is a fully functional smartphone that prioritizes user privacy much more than conventional Android smartphones. The MC03 uses AphyOS, a special operating system, but this is not free, at least not after the first year. AphyOS is an Android derivative based on the Android Open Source Project, which claims to not track users and promises system-level access. However, without an active subscription – which costs at least €10 – the manufacturer states that not only peripheral but also basic functions are deactivated, thereby severely limiting usability. On the other hand, the subscription also provides access to a VPN service.
The smartphone boasts a fairly modern set of features, though it's not a true high-end device. It has a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor paired with 8 GB of RAM. The 6.67-inch AMOLED display has a resolution of 2436 x 1080, a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, and a brightness of 550 cd/m². Weighing 240 grams, the smartphone features a 64 MP main camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera and a 32 MP main camera.
It supports a nano SIM and an eSIM card. Another notable feature is the removable battery, which can be charged at up to 30 watts wired and 15 watts wirelessly. The smartphone supposedly conforms to IP68 standards, meaning that it should be completely dust-proof and protected against continuous water immersion up to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes.
The MC03 is currrently available for pre-order at a price of €699, with delivery expected at the end of January. We've previously reviewed and tested the MC02, but we weren't entirely convinced.
