Lucid Air Sapphire: Model S Plaid killer dominates Tesla in drag strip tests
The Lucid Air Sapphire has many of the same trappings as the Tesla Model S Plaid, including outrageous acceleration claims and a trimotor AWD drive train. Lucid claims the new electric sedan can complete a quarter mile in 8.95 seconds and accelerate to 60 mph (ca. 97 km/h) in just 1.89 seconds. For contrast, the fastest stock Tesla Model S Plaid quarter mile time on Drag Times is 9.246 s. DragTimes recently put Lucid's claims to the test in a YouTube video, revealing that the Air Sapphire is a legitimate Model S Plaid killer.
In the video, DragTimes prepares the Lucid Air Sapphire for the strip with all the prerequisites, including battery pre-conditioning and tyre warming. When it comes time for the test, the Lucid Air Sapphire is put down the strip twice.
The first drag nets a result of 8.94 s at 154.85 mph (ca. 249 km/h) and a 0–60 mph time of just 1.92 s. The second run was even quicker, coming in at 8.92 s for the quarter mile and beating out even some modified Tesla Model S Plaids on the DragTimes time sheets.
The DragTimes crew plans a direct comparison between a Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire in the coming days, which will give us a better look at how the two EVs stack up in identical conditions.
