Bigger is better. Shortly after reviewing the ThinkPad E480 its bigger brother, the E580, found its way to our lab. Does the affordable 15.6-inch business notebook suffer from the same heat issues as the E480? Let us find out, shall we?

The Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is a well-built laptop with a great keyboard that includes a separate number pad. The array of ports and connectors on offer might not meet all needs, and the entry-level model's screen resolution may have limited appeal. But with smart configuration, this could prove to be a well-priced laptop for the canny business buyer.

Positive: Fast system; nice ergonomy; beautiful design; long battery life. Negative: Poor display.

Business laptops aren’t meant just to stay in the office and be connected to a couple of monitors or a dock, or whatever. They are meant to be taken to meetings, in the plane, at home or even at the coffee shop. They are defined by versatility and the best in the class are good all-rounders. Not only that but a business device represents its owner, hence it has to give a sense of authority. Although build solely from plastic, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is sturdy enough to give a feel of reliability, and the ThinkPad signature makes it recognizable. However, when we talk about style, we would be happier if we saw an aluminum body as in the case of Acer Swift 3, for example.

Lenovo Thinkpad E580-20KS003GHV
The Lenovo Thinkpad E580-20KS003GHV is a business-ready laptop designed to maximize productivity while ensuring the best value. The E580 is easy for IT to deploy, offering the simplicity of Windows 10 Pro, the hardware compatibility of multiple USB ports, and the energy efficiency of 8th-Gen quad-core Intel® processors delivering faster performance. The E580 has an impressive design with a narrow bezel and a thinner, sleek appearance. The graceful design has resulted in a much more compact solution than ever before, and the frame does not include an overly thick lining in the circle, thus the look is much more sophisticated. Thanks to its 2.1 kg, it is portable, and the 19.95 x 369 x 252 mm dimensions are also very good. As for the display, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is not much different from the E570 or E480. The 15.6-inch IPS panel is matte, which is fortunate not only indoors but mainly outdoors, because it is not reflective. The brightness is also good at an average of 267 nits and a maximum of 290 threads, so users can safely work outdoors. The E580 offers a superb video-conferencing experience, thanks to its dual-array microphone, an HD webcam, a large 15.6” IPS-FHD display, and stereo speakers with Dolby Advanced Audio.
Since this is not the most expensive business machine, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 has limited security features. As a business laptop, the E580 features a discrete Trusted Platform Module (dTPM) 2.0 chip, which works in conjunction with Windows 10 Pro BitLocker. Together they encrypt all user data as well as passwords. There is a fingerprint reader under the numeric part that works flawlessly. The heart of the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is an Intel i5-8250U. The 14-nanometer CPU has four cores that run at 1.6GHz at idle, but can clock up to 3.4GHz. The integrated graphics card, an Intel HD Graphics 620, benefits from two-channel 8GB DDR4 RAM. There are two RAM slots, one is empty for an upgrade opportunity, but there is also an M.2-2280 slot for an SSD or HDD. The ergonomic keyboard was engineered for comfort and accuracy. Its backlighting lets the user use it in low-light surroundings and complete tasks despite the late hours. And with up to 13 hours of battery life, users will get a lot of uninterrupted time without worrying about electrical outlets. Aside from that, the battery can rest easy with the Lenovo Sealed Battery Warranty, offering three-year coverage for non-CRU batteries. Furthermore, the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 is good for ports. On the right, users will find a microSD-card reader, a USB-2.0 Type-A port, Ethernet, and a Kensington lock. On the left side are a USB-3.1 Gen2 Type-C port, HDMI, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and a 3.5-mm audio port.
