Too hot stuff. The first 2018 ThinkPad is a real price-performance winner - a potential bestseller for Lenovo. Find out in our comprehensive review why the notebook is not recommendable in this configuration. Update BIOS 1.14: Massively reduced GPU performance
60% Lenovo ThinkPad E480 review: Been there, done that

Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops have been one of its most interest .. The ThinkPad E480 is not bad when you talk about the display. Like we said above, the laptop is made keeping business users in mind so you shouldn’t expect the display as one of the focus points of the device. It has a 14-inch HD (1366x768 pixels) which is not as much but you get a variant with full HD resolution display as well. There’s no higher variant than that. The unit we received came with a 14-inch full HD display, which is a decent screen to look at. You can even attempt to watch movies and TV shows on it but don’t expect the best performance. The screen reflection is not an issue with the E480 but the viewing angles are as it has a matte coating on it.

Unpretentious workhorse! Having recently reviewed the 2018 ThinkPad equipped with a Radeon RX 550 GPU, we now have the entry-level SKU in our lab. We are particularly interested in temperatures, which were the E480's most pronounced and prominent weak spot.

Positive: High mobility; compact size and light weight; nice display; excellent ergonomy; backlit keys. Negative: Overheats while using.

Lenovo ThinkPad E480 review – ThinkPad quality on the budget

Like any other, the Lenovo ThinkPad E480 is not perfect. The notebook has its pros and cons, however, the overall experience using it left us with a pleasant thought. As we mentioned in the beginning, the ThinkPad E480 is priced a little bit more than other models with similar hardware but some premium features justify this.

Lenovo ThinkPad E480-20KN001QGE

The Lenovo ThinkPad E480-20KN001QGE is a business ready laptop. It is designed to maximize productivity while ensuring the best value. Although it packs some extra weight and can run noisy, it delivers a durable metal chassis and competitive performance for a mainstream laptop. The rounded corners and edges give way to a more angular, rectangular design with clean lines, which looks much more sophisticated than the somewhat clumsy predecessor. With the case materials, Lenovo is changing from a coated plastic lid to a black-finished aluminum display cover. The base unit is made of black plastic with a smooth coating in the palm rest area. The display frame and the underside are made of brushed plastic. the E480 is also available in a silver color. As for the display, it is a Full HD IPS screen with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080. pixels. The display built into the E480 is matte and without touch-options. The E480 achieves at least a maximum brightness of 251 cd/m² in the middle segment of the display. The matte display surface in combination with sufficient brightness allows outdoor use, but one should definitely avoid the sun. In the shadows or in cloudy weather, a user can use the E480 outside without problems. The hardware specifications featured is the Intel Core i5-8250U processors. The processor is a quad-core processor. The four cores clocked with 1.6 GHz (basic clock) or 3.4 GHz running in turbo. The Intel UHD Graphics 620 is always available, paired with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. The E480 is not a gaming notebook, but PC games are possible. Newer titles are playable, but details and resolution have to be reduced. Although the E480 is a business notebook, Lenovo says it will be best for smaller companies. Therefore, the E480 does not have all the security features found in the Enterprise ThinkPads of the T or L series. For example, a smart card slot is missing. However, there is a basic set of security features. In addition to TPM 2.0, this also includes a touch-based fingerprint reader placed between the keyboard and the ThinkPad logo in the wrist-rest. This fingerprint reader works just as well as with the other ThinkPads. The E480 was built to last and tested for durability. It packs the renowned ThinkPad reliability and is backed by a one- or two-year base warranty, with up to three years total available. Lenovo's E480 incorporates an internal lithium-polymer battery with exactly the same battery capacity as its predecessor. In fact, the battery has a capacity of 45 watt-hours. E480 is one of the first models of the E-series with an optional illuminated keyboard (white backlit, two-stage). Not only that, the keys of our Chicony keyboard have a smooth feel, a sufficiently large stroke (about 1.8 mm) and a crisp pressure point. As a conclusion, the ThinkPad E480 is a tempting notebook with powerful components for an affordable price. It is essentially aimed at business users who are looking to get the benefits of ThinkPad laptops at a more affordable price tag. Hands-On-Artikel von Jagadisa Rajarathnam

The Lenovo ThinkPad E480 not only continues to wear the E series badge with pride but also returns to its roots by displaying some traditional ThinkPad traits. This new model is definitely a job well done.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

77.63%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
