The Lenovo Y50 is a good-value gaming laptop, and a pretty aggressive competitor to other laptops in this class like the Acer V Nitro and the various MSI options around the price, including the GS20. Last year the Y50 was a bit of a dodgy option given its limited screen quality, but in the 2015 upgrade to IPS panels (for both the 1080p and 4K resolutions) and the bump from a GTX 860M to GTX 960M GPU (a slight but worthwhile upgrade) Lenovo has solved some, if not all, of its problems.

As expected, buying the more expensive notebook here, the Lenovo Y50, will bring you better performance and overall user experience due to the excellent build quality, design and superb sound. On the contrary, the GL552 excels in other important areas like screen quality and cooling system which is a big deal to consider when you add up the price tag. But keep in mind that the screen quality comes at a price as our tests indicate the presence of PWM (screen flickering) across all brightness levels except 100%. The same applies for the Lenovo Y50, but the frequency of the emitted light there is 21.6 kHz and can be considered way less harmful to your eyes.

We were pleased with the overall design of the machine giving a distinctive look, premium materials while maintaining low weight (2.4 kg) and slim profile (24.5 mm). However, this notebook has its own drawbacks like leaving easily smudges on the exterior and interior, the keyboard is lacking multimedia buttons and the touchpad design isn’t all that great. The cooling system is made with style, but fails to deliver the needed airflow for keeping the internals cool. You will easily notice the heat on the top side of the keyboard and we strongly recommend using an external cooling pad with airflow above 60 or 70 CFM. This will have a huge impact on the user experience.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M: Upper mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GTX 900M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

Lenovo: Lenovo ( "Le" as in the English word legend and "novo" (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. From 2004, the company has been the largest laptop manufacturer in China and got the fourth largest manufacturer worldwide after the acquisition of IBM's PC division in 2005. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company also produces monitors, projectors, servers, etc.
In 2011, Lenovo acquired the majority of Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Lenovo took over Motorola Mobility, which gave them a boost in the smartphone market.
From 2014 to 2016 Lenovo's market share in the global notebook market was 20-21%, ranking second behind HP. However, the distance decreased gradually. In the smartphone market, Lenovo did not belong to the Top 5 global manufacturers in 2016.
80%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
