With the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14IGL05, Lenovo is testing the limits: How cheap can a laptop be? The Lenovo IdeaPad retails for 300 Euros (~$353), and we notice it at every step in our review. We cannot recommend this Lenovo laptop.

Lenovo's 11.6-incher does not have a convincing hardware configuration on board. However, the device offers silent operation, a one-year MS Office 365 Personal license and a low price level (279 Euros/~$337). Windows 10 Home in S mode serves as the operating system.

Affordable devices will always leave something to be desired. In this case, the laptop is made out of a rather inexpensive plastic, which makes the body soft, and prone to twists. Additionally, the situation around the storage is a real bummer. Well, there is a chance it’s not, but for that, you have to scratch the 64GB base option from the equation. In addition to that, the keyboard is the next strong point. It offers long key travel and clicky feedback. Pretty much the Holy Grail of keyboard comfort. And although there is no USB Type-C port to be found, you get a MicroSD card slot, an HDMI connector, and two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports. Alas, it is possible to make a super affordable laptop without sacrificing USB speed. Thanks, Lenovo for showing that. On the other hand, the biggest downside of this notebook is its display. However, when the price starts at only $250, you can’t expect anything different. That doesn’t make the 768p TN display look any better, but if this is the sacrifice you have to make to own a laptop, so be it.

If you search for the cheapest device in Lenovo’s line-up, you’ll find the IdeaPad 1 14 laptop. It uses the some of the most affordable components currently available in the market – an intel Celeron chip, 4GB of RAM, 64GB SSD storage and a middling HD TB display – but still manages to wow in design and reliable performance on basic tasks. Its keyboard is rather good, the Ice Blue color contrasted with black keys on the keyboard looks great, and because there’s no fan, it runs completely during operation. The battery life is equally great, adding more reason why you should consider it, especially if shopping on a tight budget. That said, if all you need is a super-cheap way to get your online fix then the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 81VU0079US is an ideal budget laptop. It’s reliable, comfy to use and will handle all your day-to-day browsing and video watching needs with ease – it can even be used as a work laptop and is definitely a perfect first laptop for school.

The IdeaPad 1 14 is a simple machine, but it’s well-designed and has nearly everything you’d expect from a no-nonsense laptop that allows you to check emails and get schoolwork or other light tasks done with relative ease. A "true" 128GB SSD (as opposed to an eMMC drive) and a roomy 14-inch full HD display are arguably the star attractions, with the comfortable keyboard and reasonably modern styling playing important backup roles. The only things potentially missing from this fine budget laptop are USB-C ports and a more capable Ryzen or Core processor. For the latter, you’ll need to step up to the MSI Modern 14, which is currently our top pick in the budget-laptop category. But if you need to shed another $100 or $150 from your spend versus the Modern 14, this is one of the best picks in its price zone.

One might find it difficult to navigate through this laptop’s specs sheet. This is because it comes in all kinds of iterations, featuring CPUs from both Intel and AMD, different RAM speeds, and so on. What we want to eliminate right now is that high-tier Intel and AMD configurations are not very good deals.

Nobody buys a budget laptop expecting it to have all of the features and fine touches of a more expensive machine. Slower performance and less expansive feature sets are par for the course when the price dips below $400. But somehow, even with our realistic expectations, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 15 is still underwhelming. It falls behind the competition in every performance category but battery life, which itself is largely thanks to a relatively dim, low-resolution display. In this price range, unless you can find a truly valuable deal on something like the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 (which remains our favorite budget Windows laptop), you might be better served by leaving Microsoft behind and checking out a Chromebook.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel UHD Graphics 605: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Gemini Lake series. Compared to the HD Graphics 505, the 605 offers improved display outputs.
Intel UHD Graphics 600: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Gemini Lake series. Compared to the HD Graphics 500, the 600 offers improved display outputs. Compared to the faster UHD Graphics 605, the 600 offers less shaders at lower clock speeds.
Intel UHD Graphics (Jasper Lake 32 EU): Integrated graphics card in Intel Jasper Lake Pentium Silver models based on the Gen. 11 architecture. Offers all 32 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model ranging from 350 MHz base to 900 MHz boost. The Jasper Lake chips are produced in the 10nm process at Intel produced (similar to Ice Lake).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
AMD Vega 3: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 3 CUs (= 192 shaders) and a clock of up to 1200 MHz.
AMD Vega 7: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 7 CUs (= 448 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 1,600 MHz.

Intel Gemini Lake:
Pentium N5030: Low power quad-core SoC from the Gemini Lake series for inexpensive notebooks. Runs with clocks between 1.1-3.1 GHz and integrates a DirectX 12 capable graphics adapter. The 5030 is the refresh of the older Pentium 5000 and offers a 400 MHz higher Boost clock.
Celeron N4020: A slow dual-core processor (SoC) of the Gemini Lake refresh product family. The Celeron runs at 1.1 GHz to 2.8 GHz and features a DirectX 12 capable UHD Graphics 600 integrated graphics adapter. An undeniably low-end product, this CPU is designed for use in laptops and mini-PCs of the most affordable kind.
AMD Raven Ridge (Ryzen 2000 APU):
Athlon 3050e: Mobile APU that integrates two Zen cores (with SMT, therefore 4 threads) clocked at 1.4 to 2.8 GHz. The TDP is specified at 6 Watt and therefore the chip can be passively cooled. The integrated Radeon graphics card offers 3 CUs at up to 1000 MHz (Radeon RX Vega 3). The dual channel memory controller supports DDR4-2400. The chip is manufactured in 14nm and officially counted to the 3000 series of mobile processors.
3020e: Mobile APU that integrates two Zen cores (without SMT, therefore 2 threads) clocked at 1.2 to 2.6 GHz. The TDP is specified at 6 Watt and therefore the chip can be passively cooled. The integrated Radeon graphics adapter offers 3 CUs at up to 1,000 MHz (Radeon RX Vega 3). The dual channel memory controller supports DDR4-2400. The chip is manufactured on the 14 nm process and officially counted to the 3000 series of mobile processors.
Intel Jasper Lake:
Pentium N6000: Low power quad-core SoC from the Jasper Lake series for inexpensive notebooks. Runs with clocks between 1.1 - 3.3 GHz and integrates a DirectX 12 capable graphics adapter with 32 EUs. The CPU cores are smaller and slower than in the Core CPUs (e.g. Ice Lake) but manufactured on the same 10nm process.
AMD Lucienne (Zen 2, Ryzen 5000):
R5 5500U: A hexa-core APU designed for use in ultra-thin, upper mid-range laptops. The Ryzen features six Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.1 GHz to 4.0 GHz alongside the Vega 7 graphics adapter (448 unified shaders running at up to 1,800 MHz). One could be forgiven for thinking Ryzen 5 5500U is a renamed Ryzen 5 4500U - which is not the case. Ryzen 5 5500U is most similar to Ryzen 5 4600U, the most noteworthy difference between the two being the faster iGPU model of the former.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
69.28%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
