Leaked Samsung Galaxy A 2020 models first to include the new 108 MP sensors
Samsung recently introduced a 108 MP image sensor specifically designed for smartphones, and earlier this year it also launched a 64 MP sensor, but, surprisingly enough, not a single Samsung handheld integrates any of the new sensors. Sure, the 108 MP one is brand new, but the 64 MP sensor has been on the market for around 3 months now, and it would have been nice to see it featured in the Note 10 at least. Unfortunately, the best sensor included with the Note 10+ gets a “measly” 16 MP count. It looks like Samsung prefers to first test the large sensors on the Galax A-series, before introducing them to the Galaxy S flagship series. This year’s Galaxy A80 got a 48 MP sensor, and according to a new leak, Samsung plans to equip the 2020 A models with even better sensors.
Sudhanshu Ambhore unveiled in a recent Tweet what looks to be the entire A-series scheduled for 2020. All models appear to feature rear triple-cam setups, and the top-of-the-line ones also get ToF sensors. The entry-level Galaxy A21, for example, integrates a 13 + 8 + 5 MP setup, while the 48 MP sensors will be featured only on the mid-range Galaxy A61 and A71 models. The most advanced sensors are reserved for the A81, which gets a 64 MP main, and the A91, which would be the first model to integrate the new 108 MP sensor.
Additionally, all mid-range models plus the A81 would get 2x optical zoom (there will be versions with 5x, as well) on the telephoto sensor, whereas the A91 gets a 5x optical. The 64 MP and 108 MP sensors can also combine light information from 4 adjacent pixels into 1 to boost the clarity for low-light shots.
Hopefully the next generation of Galaxy S and Note models would finally feature at least 48 MP sensors, if not the latest 64 or 108 MP ones. It is unclear why Samsung prefers to downplay the imaging capabilities of its flagship smartphones, while Huawei and Oppo make efforts to include the best sensors even on mid-range handhelds.
