A trailer and gameplay snippets recently leaked for From Software's upcoming Elden Ring. The quality of the video isn't great - it appears to be a low-quality smartphone recording of the content playing on PC. But, from the two minutes of footage, it appears that Elden Ring will be taking the Souls formula to the next level on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
The video seemed to showcase some of the character classes, two of which caught our attention: 20 seconds into the video, we see what look to be the Wanderer and Bandit classes from Dark Souls III, with similar weapons and armor. The gameplay snippets highlight details Souls fans will recognize immediately, right down to the slow, torturous way the player character opens doors and gates.
What's different here is the open world environment - the trailer offers glimpses of wide-open fields of grass and showcases horse-riding, amid sections that show off boss fights. Putting this together, it's possible to get a clearer idea of how Elden Ring works, structurally: as in earlier Souls games, we see a wide range of environments here. But instead of channeling players through corridors, Elden Ring's open world likely connects these areas together - if From Software can find a way to make side activities work at least as well as the submissions in Nioh 2, this could considerably up the replayability factor, even more than in existing Souls games.
