Leak reveals Samsung SSD T5 Evo as an affordable, robust USB-C SSD with up to 8 TB storage
After the Samsung SSD T9 was officially presented in October, a cheaper, more robust alternative will reportedly follow soon. WinFuture has already published images (embedded below) and a number of details about the Samsung SSD T5 Evo, which has not yet been announced.
Compared to the Samsung SSD T5, which is no longer available, the Evo model offers significantly more robust housing that is supposed to withstand drops from a height of up to two meters and has a large eye hook at one end, allowing the SSD to be easily attached to a backpack or key ring.
Samsung is taking the opportunity to upgrade the storage too - buyers can choose between 2 TB, 4 TB and 8 TB of flash memory, with recommended retail prices of US$189.99, US$349.99 and US$655.99, respectively. The connection to the PC is via USB-C 3.2 Gen 1, so the speed is limited to 5 Gbit/s.
According to the photos on the packaging, this bandwidth is not fully utilized, as the SSD only reaches speeds of 460 MB/s, making it more suitable for occasional backups than for working directly from the SSD. The drive measures 95 x 40 x 17 millimeters and weighs 102 grams. By comparison, the Samsung T9 measures 88 x 60 x 14 millimeters and weighs 122 grams. The Samsung SSD T5 Evo is compatible with all Windows versions from Windows 7 upwards and macOS from version 10.10.
