While Xbox is struggling and seems to have lost its way as of late, it wasn’t always so. In fact, even the Xbox One, a console launch remembered as an absolute disaster, had some pretty good Day One games. Among these was Ryse: Son of Rome, a third-person action-adventure game that aimed to showcase the capabilities of the Xbox One.
From a purely graphical and cinematic perspective, Ryse: Son of Rome was breathtaking when it launched. Crytek, the studio behind the title, flexed its muscles with next-gen graphics and animation work. As a result, Ryse: Son of Rome was universally praised for its presentation.
However, due to the somewhat underwhelming combat, the game got a mixed reception and was quickly forgotten. To this day, Ryse: Son of Rome remains an underappreciated and underloved Xbox One title that deserved far more attention than it received.
If Ryse: Son of Rome never showed up on your radar, now is a perfect time to give the game a shot, as the title is on sale on Steam for only $2.99, a substantial discount. However, you’ll have to hurry up, as the discount is only valid till the end of November.
Ryse: Son of Rome is a tale of revenge set in ancient Rome
Ryse: Son of Rome takes place in ancient Rome around 60 AD. It is the tale of Marius Titus, who becomes a Roman soldier to take revenge for his slain family. The game is 6 to 7 hours long and features a mix of third-person melee combat, exploration, and bombastic set pieces. You’ll explore various locations in Britannia and Rome, including iconic ones like the Colosseum.
While Ryse: Son of Rome excels in visual presentation, the combat has been the main point of criticism. It is essentially a “story-first” game, where the melee combat, while brutal and satisfying at first, can get repetitive. So, if you are someone who prefers their games to have a tight combat system, Ryse might not be the game for you.
That said, Ryse: Son of Rome is more than the sum of its parts, as proved by a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. It is a lot of game for just $2.99, especially when we consider that the Steam version also bundles all post-launch content.
