A small number of 2026 Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys are being recalled. Information filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows the issue is with improperly installed front seat fasteners.
The units affected were produced between April 3 and May 7, 2025, comprising 18 Model 3s and 30 Model Ys, including both standard and Performance trims.
Tesla has traced the problem to a change it implemented to improve its manufacturing process, which involved skipping a faulty step in final seat fastener torque verification. The modification, however, means the car could ship with one or more fasteners loose or missing entirely, and the seat would not properly secure riders in the event of an accident.
According to Tesla, tell-tale signs include rattling seats. However, customers can confirm if their Model 3 or Model Y is being recalled by putting their VIN on Tesla’s VIN Recall Search tool.
The fix will require a physical visit to a Tesla service center, where technicians will inspect the seat and properly torque or replace the fasteners as needed. The service will be provided at no charge because the cars are still under warranty.
Meanwhile, Tesla has not received any reports of injuries or fatalities related to the fasteners. The first case was detected by service technicians in May.
