While Prototype and Prototype 2 were fun games at launch, the series never received any momentum, and thus, a third game. If a recent haul by data miners (H/T PC Gamer) is accurate, we might soon be able to experience it on modern-day hardware with upgraded graphics and whatnot. Both games received a hefty 600 MB update recently, seemingly out of the blue.
As a result, it broke a mod that made the game playable on current-gen PCs, as evidenced by a recent spate of negative reviews. A quick peek into its contents revealed never-before-seen maps and a new credits scene that referenced a "Ubisoft Connect" version, which is very likely a placeholder for a future Prototype/Prototype 2 remaster because Ubisoft Connect didn't exist back in 2009. It also calls out "Iron Galaxy" studios by name.
That's a bit concerning because it was responsible for the disastrous PC port of The Last of Us Part 1. Nevertheless, these changes are too specific to be random, and given we're in the era of remakes and remasters, a Prototype and Prototype 2 rehaul seems plausible. After all, it did lay some of the groundwork for an open world with destructible elements that has become the norm of late.
