The Huawei Nova 12 Lite seems to have all the right specs to make it a performance-oriented all-rounder. The smartphone relies heavily on the design and the performance aspect and they certainly pay off. The design is simply unbeatable at this price point and the performance is more than decent. The camera performance was also quite good, that is if you can ignore the secondary camera performance. There’s almost nothing to complain about except for 5G connectivity, which is not here. Even this would have been not much of a problem if the pricing was decent, which it isn’t. At this price, other smartphones are providing far better features than just 5G. Knowing that those smartphones exist, we cannot say that the pricing is good by any means.

The Huawei Nova 12 Ultra smartphone seems to provide all the right specs to provide a solid user experience. It has a high-end display, chipset, and battery that are usually reserved for high-end smartphones. But the smartphone also missed many features such as a better camera, water resistance, wireless charging, and Android OS support. Some smartphones provide better features along with a far better camera system for a price tag that is lower than the Nova 12 Ultra smartphone. That’s none other than the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE which provides similar or better specs in every way. So, if you live outside of China, there’s very little reason to go for the Huawei Nova 12 Ultra. But if you live in mainland China, then this smartphone can be a better option, thanks to HarmonyOS 4.0’s rich ecosystem support that may vastly enhance the user experience for Chinese users. However, the final decision is up to you, so it is better to choose a smartphone based on your requirements and needs.

The Huawei Nova 12 brings together a good set of features and specs in the mid-range price segment. It has an attractive design, a sturdy build, an amazing camera, 5G connectivity, and many other things. But, at the same time, the Nova 12 series phone is currently exclusive to the Chinese smartphone market, and it’s not confirmed when the company will unveil it to the global market. But, the core downside of purchasing this phone would be average gameplay performance. The phone lacks when it comes to the cooling system and GPU support. Although the device attains the GPU turbo booster, it lacks when it comes to real-time performance. However, you won’t face any major issues with the camera department as the photos and video quality are good. Yet, there’s no doubt that the phone lacks proper video stabilization support.

The Huawei nova 12i is a curious case. Coming in at PHP 12,999, it boasts a headline-grabbing 108-megapixel camera, but the rest of the phone feels like a budget afterthought. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a competent entry-level phone with a spec sheet that checks most of the boxes: big battery paired with fast charging, a decent camera, and a smooth, large display. But just like those flashy megapixels, some cracks start to show. The lack of Google Play Services and the dated Android 12 base might be significant hurdles, forcing users to jump through hoops for essential apps. The 108MP camera may sound impressive on paper, but real-world performance falls a bit short. While photos are decent for casual social media use, video capture leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re a die-hard Huawei fan or simply crave a phone with a massive megapixel count for bragging rights, the nova 12i might be worth considering. But for most users, there are better options out there that offer a more balanced package for the same price.

At R6 999 the Huawei nova 12i is competitively priced, but as you will quickly find out should you do any research about similarly priced or specced options available locally, things can get quite competitive. As such, the nova 12i feels like it is lacking a little oomph, and could benefit from more punch in terms of processing power and a slightly richer display. Areas where it cannot be faulted, however, are the solid all-around camera, the large and long-lasting 5 000mAh battery, and an eye-catching colour option (there is a Black colourway too). All things considered, it may in fact end up being other nova options, such as last year’s 11 series, or the nova 12 SE that are more tempting as longer-term phones.

Finally, let’s discuss whether this Huawei Nova 12i smartphone is worth purchasing or not. From the specs and features overview, one thing is clear Huawei Nova 12i can handle performance, battery life, and display experience. On the other hand, the camera department does perform well with daylight photos and videos. But the same thing didn’t apply to lowlight photography or videography. Anyway, the phone is exclusively available in China, and it would be tough to get this phone in other countries. In that scenario, you should check alternative options like Nothing Phone 2A. It’s a complete package of performance, camera, and features. Meanwhile, make a decision based on your requirements and needs.

Now let’s talk about the price. The HUAWEI nova 12 SE retails for PHP 15,999. And in its own right, it makes an impression with more than capable cameras, sleek design, and superb fast charging. But in a crowded market like this, it just doesn’t do enough to stand out. Compared to the competition, it honestly feels a bit behind the curve. Ultimately, the nova 12 SE’s biggest weakness is its rather old chipset. It almost feels like a missed opportunity for Huawei. A newer chip could have boosted performance across the board, potentially even unlocking better camera capabilities on a whole new level. As it stands, the nova 12 SE is a frustrating case of wasted potential. While it definitely has the makings of a solid mid-ranger, the dated chipset holds it back significantly. If you prioritize better performance for the same price, you’d be wise to look elsewhere. However, if you are enticed with the phone’s sleek profile and design or captivated by its camera prowess, then the nova 12 SE looks to be a convenient alternative.

The Huawei Nova 12 SE is a smartphone that is designed to impress people and it surely does with beautiful craftsmanship and design. You could even say it’s an 8/10 in terms of pure looks, but we can’t say the same about the internals. It has a decently good display but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Other smartphones in the same price range provide a much higher refresh rate. The same goes for the chipset, battery, and charging capabilities, which are far better in other smartphones. That’s not to say that the ones in this smartphone are bad, it’s just that the competition is a lot better and has better prices. The only main selling points of this smartphone are its design and camera and they are good. For all that it provides, is the pricing of this smartphone justified? No, but if you can find the smartphone at a discount, then it could be worth it.

75%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
