The Mate series is Huawei's top-of-the-line technological product. It has always been equipped with the latest high-end specifications and combines a large display with long battery life. The Chinese have remained true to this line this year, but they stumble when it comes to a core component.

Hardware-wise, Huawei made a contender for the best all-around smartphone in 2020. The Mate 40 Pro hangs with the best in the business... if you don’t need Google services. For those that do, it's a very difficult phone to recommend for over £1,000.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro 5G might be the best Android flagship phone you encounter in 2021 based on its hardware and specifications alone, but that experience comes with a well known asterisks, Google apps. While we can recommend the Mate 40 Pro 5G to seasoned Huawei phone owners, newcomers to the ecosystem will be left wanting.

We had some grave reservations of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro, but the phone goes a long way towards answering them. It feels a bit like the Android equivalent of a Jailbreaked iPhone, but with additional support from Huawei. We were tempted to dismiss it as a second rate experience in a similar way that Bing might be to Google Search, but that’s not fair considering that the hardware on offer is arguably the best available of any phone anywhere.

Once again, Huawei produces a beautiful smartphone to appeal to the Google-avoiders and geeks who are up for some sideloading. If that’s you, the Mate 40 Pro’s expansive screen, rich design, nippy interface and excellent camera will leave you grinning from ear to ear. For everyone else, the Google-shaped potholes that become apparent across a typical day and the high price will likely result in one too many compromises to take the plunge.

I really wanted too like the Mate 40 Pro and there are certain elements to ut that I do really enjoy the design is great (with the notable exclusion of the camera array). The power being delivered by the phone is fantastic. The screen is beautiful and is on par with the best from Samsung and Apple. The phone feels great in the hand as well. All these things are great and set the phone to a very high standard. It is just such a shame that the phone is in my opinion stymied for the Western market due in most part to an Orange skinned lunatic that was (thankfully no more) in charge of the American Government.

75% Huawei Mate 40 Pro review: Great cameras and improving ecosystem within a flagship device
Source: Hardware Zone English
That said, with major local apps seeing greater support on AppGallery now means that it’s far easier to migrate to the HMS ecosystem when you compare it to the Mate 30 Pro’s era. It’s also a no-brainer upgrade from the previous generation Mate devices since users of the Mate 30 series would’ve already gotten used to the workarounds by now. At a S$1,598 price tag, it’s squarely within a highly-contested market here, but the camera makes a decent showing as to why it’s worth going to an HMS Huawei handset. Naturally, if you value Google-backed services more than camera prowess, you should be looking at other Android handsets for the time being.

A month with the Huawei Mate 40 Pro
Source: GSM Arena English Archive.org version
All we can say is that we're sad it's come to this, and Huawei would have had one of the main flagship contenders of the year, sales-wise, in 2020, if politics would have stayed out of the mobile space. Alas, things are the way they are, and so we need to judge products based on what they are and not what they could have been. The Mate 40 Pro is an excellent smartphone with a few downsides. If you can live with those, including not knowing what exactly the future will bring in a year or two, software-wise, then it's definitely worthy of your attention and hard-earned cash.

Hands-on: playing with the Huawei Mate 40 Pro
Source: Hardware Zone English Archive.org version
The design leaks proved true - circular emblem on the Mate 40 Pro's rear is a ring around the various camera housings. Form follows function, which gave rise to Huawei's Space Ring Design that envelopes the cameras. It's quite similar to the Mate 30 Pro's design choice, but somehow the Mate 40 Pro manages to improve upon an old look. They removed the embossed ring and gave Leica a prime position to announce its involvement in Huawei's smartphone cameras.

I’ll be honest, no – it’s not got my SIM in it and I’ve switched back to my Note 10 Plus because I have got that all set up for work. It will remain there for the time being. However, I am using the Mate 40 for all my non-work related tasks at the moment. Pictures, videos, gaming, music, personal emails etc. I am going to give it a try as my main phone for the rest of this week to see how it copes and maybe I will be impressed, maybe I won’t.

But overall, like I said, it's a winner. Benchmarking apps aren't what make a phone great. This thing has a beautiful 90Hz OLED display, even if I want 120Hz. It's also got a unique and bold design, something that Huawei is second to none at providing. And finally, it's got one of the best cameras on the market.

This is the coolest device Huawei has ever produced and arguably one of the best around at the moment. Sadly, it's difficult to recommend; particularly with its £917 price tag, but mainly because it hasn't got the Google Play store. It's also hard to review Huawei products without mentioning Google, because until it gets its app ecosystem up to a good enough standard, there will always be a feeling it's lacking. It doesn't matter how good the hardware is: if you have to live without your favourite apps and services, that makes it a tough Mate to love.

Huawei Mate40 Pro Review
Source: Yugatech English Archive.org version
The Huawei Mate40 Pro, without a doubt, is the best smartphone the company has released to date. It’s almost the perfect phone, checking out the requirements we want for a 2020 flagship — a large immersive screen with a high refresh rate, great speakers, the most powerful cameras in the smartphone market, amazing performance, great battery life, cool software features, and comprehensive connectivity features. What will probably ruin the experience for some users is the lack of Google support, and it’s not even Huawei’s fault. But even if you consider that, the pros mentioned above can easily overwhelm the glaring con. But in a world where Huawei has access to Google, this is the perfect smartphone.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro carries the same strengths and weaknesses as the company's other recent phones. The hardware is excellent for the most part, and class-leading in some places. The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is one of the best phones around in terms of hardware – its cameras take incredible pictures, its screen looks great, and it feels wonderful in the hand thanks to its curved display and slender build. It’s just a shame that the software lets the phone down so badly. The lack of Google apps, particularly the Play Store, means there’s lots you can’t do on this device – you can’t use most social media platforms, or play many of the games you’d like, or handily navigate around a city. The price is a little high too.

On first impression, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a mighty camera phone. It’s loaded up with a giant curved screen that looks beautiful, palm rejection that puts Samsung’s Note 20 Ultra to shame, excellent stereo speakers, and one of the best cameras on the market. Huawei Mate 40 Pro Camera review: Dynamic range monster
Source: DxOMark English Archive.org version
It appears Huawei camera engineers have kept very busy after the launch of the P40 Pro earlier this year in order to make the Mate 40 Pro’s camera even better, despite the lack of optical image stabilization in the primary module. The new model improves on the already very good performance of the P40 Pro in several areas and is particularly impressive for dynamic range, providing good highlight retention even in low light, something that even many flagship phones struggle with. This makes it an excellent choice for any kind of low-light photography, but the new Huawei is more than capable of dealing with any photographic challenge you throw at it.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro Selfie review: Less is more
Source: DxOMark English Archive.org version
The Mate 40 Pro front camera uses a lower-resolution sensor than its P40 Pro sibling in quite a simple camera setup. Nevertheless, image results are very good pretty much across the board and the new Huawei deservedly takes the number one spot in our DXOMARK Selfie ranking, leaving other devices with more complex multi-cam setups and autofocus systems behind. Outstanding scores in both Photo and Video categories make it an easy choice for selfie still and video shooters alike.
