Honeywell and musical artist Will.i.am announce Xupermask face mask complete with LEDs, Bluetooth headphones, and more for a mere $299
Honeywell is a company with its hand in many different pots, ranging from aerospace to safety gear to quantum computing. Will.i.am is a musical artist who dabbles in a variety of genres, projects, and business ventures. So what would you get if you put the two together? The Xupermask, a face mask with aesthetics straight out of Cyberpunk 2077 and every bell and whistle you could imagine.
Bringing Honeywell’s experience in manufacturing N95 face masks and Will.i.am’s propensity for pushing trends, the Xupermask is made from mesh fabric and silicon. The mask has three dual-speed fans built into it to aid the HEPA filtration system. For music lovers, there are also built-in Bluetooth headphones with noise-canceling tech. LED lights illuminate the two prominent filters on the front of the mask. An integrated rechargeable battery powers everything.
The Xupermask will sell for US$299, which seems ridiculously expensive for a simple face mask. Considering the Bluetooth noise-canceling headphones, though, that price makes a bit more sense. However, that’s highly dependent on the quality of the headphones and the efficacy of the mask, which Honeywell points out does not have medical-quality filtration.
Considering the Xupermask will sell in hyped-up “drops” directly to interested customers, it seems more akin to expensive sneakers, stylized headphones, and other pricey pieces of futuristic fashion. The Xupermask seems to be about making a statement and turning heads rather than fighting the current pandemic.
