Honda has officially completed its first solid-state battery production facility. It looks like the motorcycle maker will get into full-swing with solid-state electric motorcycle batteries as early as January, with the hopes of shorter EV charge times, better range, and lighter designs.

Honda is no stranger to electric vehicles, having previously shown off plenty of electric vehicle concepts and production models — both cars and motorcycles. Now, the automotive giant hopes to revolutionise the electric motorcycle industry with a move into solid-state EV batteries.

The latest announcement from Honda's battery development division sees the completion of a Japanese solid-state battery demonstration production line. The goal of the new plant is to replicate, develop, and verify the production of solid-state EV batteries.

The new production facility will start making solid-state batteries in January 2025, although it's unclear exactly when its solid-state batteries will end up in production EVs and electric motorcycles, with claims of "the second half of 2025" offering little clarification. Honda says that its roll-pressing technique will increase energy density by packing more of the solid electrolyte material into the battery and increasing contact surface area between the electrolyte and electrode.

Now, in the area of all-solid-state batteries, Honda is conducting speedy research and development in two core areas – material specifications and manufacturing methods – with the aim of starting mass production of the battery in the second half of the 2020s.

While solid-state batteries are largely held as a sort of holy grail for increasing range, charging times, and even battery safety, it has thus far been an elusive endeavour, with only a handful of EV makers, like CATL, claiming to have solid-state batteries even close to production-ready. Honda previously stated that it is aiming for a 50% weight reduction for its mass-market EV batteries, and it hopes to achieve that figure with the use of solid-state batteries.

By increasing cost competitiveness of its all-solid-state batteries through the adoption of a highly efficient production process and by expanding application of the batteries to a wide range of Honda mobility products, not only automobiles but motorcycles and aircraft, Honda aims to further reduce battery costs by taking advantage of economies of scale.
