Reviews for the HP ZBook 17 G6-6TV00EA

HP ZBook 17 G6 review – 100% workstation experience with upgradable graphics
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
You can hardly argue against a laptop such as the ZBook 17 G6. We mean, there are some obvious downsides to the machine, which can be ignored, simply because of the purpose of its build. First, at 3.20 kg it is not one of the heaviest we’ve tested, but standing at 33 mm height makes it one of the bulkiest devices of 2019.

Series:

When HP has introduced its lineup of new-generation mobile workstations, the ZBook 17 G6 has acquired the role of being the largest model in the lineup compared to its sibling, the ZBook 15 G6. Despite sharing some of the same upgraded components as the ZBook 15 G6, e.g. the latest 9th-Gen Intel Core i9 along with Xeon Processors, which goes as high as the 2.4 GHz Xeon E 2286M vPro processor with up to 5.0 GHz via Turbo Boost, this model does differ from its sibling in some ways. One of the biggest differences has to be the GPU: It features a more powerful NVIDIA Quadro RTX5000 as compared to the RTX3000 in the ZBook 15 G6. This GPU supports ray tracing, deep learning and also advanced shading. The ZBook 17 G6 also beats its sibling with its capability to incorporate up to three 1TB PCle Gen 3 x 4 NVMe TLC SSDs along with its existing features of three USB-3.0 ports, two USB Type-C ports (Thunderbolt 3 + DP 1.4 + USB-3.1 Gen-2) along with an HDMI port.

Just like the ZBook 15, this model also has up to 128 GB of RAM for massive tasks, perhaps to crunch data. The ZBook 17 G6 is certainly equipped with powerful components, but it might not be quite affordable for everyone. Therefore, there are also less expensive options which fit well into different budgets. For example the wide range of storage options, which allow up to 10 TB of storage along with an optical drive such as M.2 PCle, M.2 SATA and also 2.5-inch SATA SSDs for users to choose from. Apart from that, there are also less-powerful graphics options, such as the Intel UHD Graphics 630 and P630 or the NVIDIA T1000, RTX 3000 and RTX 4000, especially intended for users who are on a strict budget.

Similar to the ZBook 15, this model also incorporates features that focus on collaboration and digital communication. This includes the HP Privacy Camera, which physically covers the camera when it is not in use, and also the HP Collaboration Keyboard, which allows users to adjust the volume easily, connect or end a call and also gives the choice of muting/unmuting people. In addition, the ZBook 17 G6 comes with a third microphone which has the ability to pick up other voices around the meeting table and cancel them out with the HP’s ambient-noise cancellation technology built into this laptop. This feature definitely makes this laptop an awesome choice for corporate professionals out there. The overall design is still the same as its sibling’s with a nice aluminum build and a metallic finish, but due to its larger 17-inch screen size, this device needs a larger carrying bag to accommodate it. This model also carries a slightly larger 95.6Whr Polymer battery pack which reaches a battery life of up to 17 hours. Despite having great add-ons, the choice of owning the ZBook 17 is entirely subjective and depends on the user’s preferences.

Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 (Laptop): High-end professional laptop graphics card based on the consumer GeForce RTX 2070 (TU106 chip) of with 2,304 shaders and 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM. Compared to the desktop variant, the GPU is clocked lower. It offers certified drivers that are optimized for stability and performance.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

i9-9880H: On Coffee Lake architecture based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates six processor cores clocked at 2.9- 4.8 GHz (4.3 GHz with 6 cores) that support HyperThreading. Manufactured in an improved 14nm process (14nm++). Offers an unlocked multiplier that allows overclocking of the CPU.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.2 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

60%: Such a poor rating is rare. There are only a few notebooks that were rated even worse. The rating websites do not give a purchase recommendation here.
