The 15-B168CA still doesn't have the power to play games smoothly at native resolution, for that you'll need a more performance oriented system like the HP Pavilion M6-1188CA. The 15-168CA's battery performance was kind of short, at 3 hours 19 minutes. Contrast this with the HP Pavilion M6-1188CA with almost six hours or the Samsung Series 3 with over five hours.

At only £449, the HP's 1TB hard disk and 8GB of memory make it look like a great deal, but we're not convinced. While touch-enabled rivals such as the Sony VAIO Fit 15E cost more, we'd advise it's a price worth paying for a more balanced package.

The HP Pavilion Touchsmart 15-b129ea Sleekbook is sold as a cheap and cheerful 15.6-inch touchscreen laptop, and from a distance it certainly looks like it belongs in a higher price bracket with its stylish thin design. When put through its paces though, the points of cost saving become pretty starkly apparent: the screen isn’t particularly sharp or bright, it can be pretty sluggish in its day to day usage, there’s no DVD drive, and the battery capacity is so-so at just over four hours. A nice looking and competently performing budget touchscreen 15.6-inch laptop with some obvious cost savings, but there are better options out there in a similar price bracket.

Slim all-rounder. It's a slim 15.6-inch all-rounder including a touchscreen that Hewlett Packard has with its Pavilion TouchSmart 15. A Core i7 and GeForce core provide enough computing power. Owing to the ULV CPU, the laptop should also offer long battery runtimes. Our test report reveals whether the laptop sticks out from the crowd.

It is 38x25.5x2cm, the thickest point is at the back and it is barely 1cm at the front. If you are considering Windows 8.1 for you next PC then it really should have touch and this offering from HP has it. Windows 8 was made for touch so if you can change your working style then this could well be a good way to adapt.

The lack of decent screen resolution is disappointing in a laptop costing Almost £700, but the Pavilion TouchSmart 15 is a solid workhorse of a laptop with a reasonable mid-range price tag. It's not particularly portable, but it'll be a choice for people who want a fairly powerful all-round Windows laptop that can be used as a desktop-replacement PC at home.

The size and weight of the Pavilion 15 TouchSmart suggest that it's more intended as a desktop replacement system for use at home or in the office. However, its all-round performance, combined with an attractive screen and optical drive, provide very good value for money, and ensure that the Pavilion 15 TouchSmart will appeal to most users on a tight budget.

HP's latest machine looks good, feels sturdy, and is easy to carry day-to-day, and its AMD APU makes it a well-rounded budget system. The poor screen, speakers and keyboard, though, mean it's tricky to recommend this system for any sort of more intensive use – it's only suitable for basic tasks. If you need a modest laptop and you're concerned about its looks more than the fine details, though, you'll be happy with this.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
