With great power… comes great affordability? The HP Pavilion Power 15t is back, this time with an AMD RX 550 GPU and an even lower price tag than before. Unfortunately, we ran into some unexpected challenges with our review unit.

HP Pavilion Power 15-cb061nd
The HP Pavilion Power 15-cb061nd is an evolution of both the Pavilion 15t and Pavilion 15z. Its HQ-class Kaby Lake processor and GTX 1050 GPU target mainstream gamers and heavy multimedia users who would rather not spend a little more on the HP Omen series. The chassis is a considerable improvement over the standard Pavilion 15 in terms of looks and rigidity. Edges and corners are sharper, stronger, and more defined for an improved aesthetic. The hooked rear is a good idea on paper as it lifts the base slightly for improved airflow and ergonomics, but the display teeters more easily and the maximum angle is limited to about 150 degrees. The unique lid design also occupies the entire rear edge of the system and thus takes away potential space for ports and ventilation. The anti-glare 15.6-inch (39.6 cm) display features FHD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, the IPS technology and WLED backlight. Viewing angles are wide as expected from an IPS panel with no major contrast or color degradation. Outdoor visibility is good with since it is an anti-glare screen. However, contrast levels and color spaces are less crisp and clear compared to glossy screens. Under the hood, the processor of the laptop is an Intel Core i7-7700HQ with 2.8 GHz base frequency, 6 MB cache, 4 cores. The clock rate can increase to up to 3.8 GHz thanks to Intel's Turbo Boost Technology, running on the Intel HM175 chipset. The CPU is supported by 8 GB of DDR4-2400 SDRAM. As for storage, it is equipped with a primary 256 GB SATA III M.2 drive and a secondary 1 TB HDD. The laptop uses the GTX 1050 graphic processor, which is powerful enough to play most modern titles on medium settings while maintaining average frame rates above 30 FPS. It is also the perfect companion for photo and video editing. The Chiclet keyboard (~34.2 x 10.0 cm) is an improvement over the Pavilion 15t series. Since the Pavilion 15 Power chassis is more rigid, the center surface of the keyboard is firmer to press with improved tactile feedback. A white backlight is available that can only be toggled on or off as is common across most HP notebooks. The extra-wide chrome-trimmed trackpad (11.5 x 6.0 cm) is slightly smaller in surface area than the Pavilion 15's (12.0 x 6.5 cm). The Synaptics software can recognize up to three-finger inputs without any issues and the plastic surface flexes only slightly when applying strong pressure with a finger. For input and output ports, the laptop has a USB 3.1 Type-C port supporting HP Sleep and Charge, three USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI port, an RJ-45 ethernet port and a headphone/microphone combo. HP decided to not include Thunderbolt 3 support and to instead reserve this feature for its higher-end Spectre and Omen series of notebooks. The HP Pavilion Power 15-cb061nd is a high performance notebook targeted at people who need high processing power with a little bit of gaming. It would be suitable for students who run simulations and professionals who do some video editing. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

If you are looking for a powerful Windows laptop, then this is clearly one of the best options out there. Given the size and weight as well as the use case, I think this would be more of a desktop replacement than a laptop you would carry around all the time. But then, as with most other Windows devices now, there is a price to be paid for high-end performance and dependability and in this case that is close to Rs 90,000 and I am not sure I want to spend so much on a laptop that is not really mobile.

HP Pavilion Power 15t-1GK62AV
When style meets entry-level components with a value-targeted price tag, a user will get something like the HP Pavilion Power 15t. The laptop delivers elegant good looks, impressive battery life (for a gaming notebook) and the solid performance by way of its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU and Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor. The black brushed-aluminum chassis is positively lovely, especially the lid, which has a glossy Elphaba-green HP logo in the center. The rear of the lid gently curves over the hinge, with "Pavilion" spelled out in that lovely green. Opening the laptop revealed a black brushed-aluminum deck, with lovely splashes of green on the speaker, keyboard, and touchpad. At 2,45 kg (5.4 lb) and 37,85 x 25,15 x 2,54 cm (14.9 x 9.9 x 1 Zoll), the Power 15t is on par with the competition, including the Asus ROG Strix GL503 (2.54 kg / 5.6 lb, 38.35 x 26.16 x 2.29 cm / 15.1 x 10.3 x 0.9 inch) and the Origin PC Eon15-S (13.21 kg / 5.2 lb, 37.85 x 26.67 x 2.54 cm /14.9 x 10.5 x 1 inch). Unfortunately, the 15.6-inch touchscreen is dim and dull, which is not ideal for a gaming laptop. Covering just 68 percent of the sRGB color gamut, the Power 15t's screen is well below the 101-percent category average. As for brightness, the Power 15t's panel averaged 173 nits, which is below the 247-nit average. Outfitted with a 2.5-GHz Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor and 12 GB of RAM, the Power 15t is an able multitasker. The Power 15t is equipped with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 4 GB of VRAM. It is on the low-end of Nvidia's 10-Series Pascal GPUs but can still deliver solid gaming performance in more modest settings. Despite its discrete GPU, the Power 15t does not offer much in the way of gaming-centric software. In fact, a user only gets Nvidia's GeForce Experience, which offers a suite of utilities to enhance their gaming experiences, such as Battery Boost, Game Optimization and ShadowPlay, which lets user live stream their games. Gaming laptops typically suffer from short battery life, but that is not the case with the Power 15t. The notebook lasted 6 hours on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi. The notebook also has a number of HP-branded apps and utilities, such as HP Recovery Manager in case of a system crash. A user also gets HP Support Assistant for running system updates and troubleshooting fixes. Orbit lets user pair their laptop and smartphone so they can seamlessly transfer content (documents, photos, music, and videos) between devices. The notebook has a nice selection of ports, including a USB 3.0 port, a USB Type-C port, HDMI, a 3-in-1 card reader, Gigabyte Ethernet and a power port on the right side. A quick glance along the left reveals an additional two USB 3.0 ports, a headset jack, and a secure lock slot. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

HP Pavilion Power 15-cb012ns
The HP Pavilion Power 15-cb012ns is the latest mid-to-high range of laptop from this American company. This latest notebook from Hewlett Packard is very similar to the HP Omen 15-CE but it offers a more sensible and professional design, and it is cheaper too. This new laptop from HP comes equipped with a 4-cores 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 8 GB of RAM, 1 TB of hard disk storage, and an NVIDIA GTX1050 graphics card. These powerful specs make this laptop best suited for professional users who intend to work with power-hungry photo editing and video programs and also gamers who prefer a laptop to the traditional desktop. This 15.6-inch laptop is 24.1 mm thick and weighs about 2.21 kilograms, not forgetting the power supply adapter that weighs about 431 grams. It is by no means an easy machine to lug around. For those who want to game on the go, the NVIDIA GTX1050 that came with this laptop has enough graphics power to play most modern AAA titles at max settings with frame rates in the 30 FPS range. Expecting a consistent 60 FPS out of this machine may just be asking too much of this laptop. The Full HD IPS also offers great wide viewing angles and excellent color reproduction. As with modern laptops, it comes with an HDMI output to allow connection to an external display. It is a bit of a let-down that HP has only equipped this new laptop with a traditional 1 TB of HDD storage. A saving grace is that the HDD works at 7200 RPM instead of the slower 5400 RPM, and there is also the possibility of putting in an additional faster SSD drive. And, like most laptop these days, it doesn’t come with an optical drive. As mentioned, the HP Pavilion Power 15-cb012ns comes with a generous 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, and for those who are hungry for more power, it is also upgradable to a maximum of 16 GB of RAM. As per the norm, this HP Pavilion Power 15-cb012ns comes with Windows 10 Home 64-bits out of the box, and it is also adequately equipped with the usual suspects of connectivity ports: a USB 3.0 Type-C port, three USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit network port, Bluetooth 4.2, dual band wifi adapter, SD card reader, one HDMI port, and a headphone and mic combo jack. Most users (or gamers) who fancy a sturdy laptop with an elegant design and a Full HD IPS screen will likely enjoy owning this laptop. Even though it is a little on the heavy side, the powerful CPU and GPU will more than make up for it. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications
