A Core i9-13900HX and GeForce RTX 4080 provide sufficient performance for video processing, rendering, and QHD gaming. The keyboard of the laptop also offers individual key illumination, six macro keys, and a lot of space for the arrow keys.

HP’s Omen line of laptops are known for their sheer speed and graphics firepower. The latest Omen 17 is no different in that regard, as it comes with a powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU and an Intel Core i9-13900HX CPU. The refreshed core components from the new GPU (Ada Lovelace) and CPU generation (Raptor Lake) are the main differences to last year’s Omen 17. The casing remains largely unchanged, however. It also sits in a black chassis with a plastic underside and a lid adorned with the Omen logo and lettering. The angular design gives the impression of pure power. While this laptop has a lot to offer, there are a few unimpressive aspects to it. Fingerprints on the lid and wrist rest are a nuisance after a short time. The lid also wobbles when you change the viewing angle and the case has no ports on the back, making cable management difficult. That said, those are minor quibbles with an otherwise outstanding gaming laptop.

The Omen 17 shows impressively what a 17-inch gaming laptop can be, offering midrange performance at a stable and high level, while the cooling works at a surprisingly moderate noise level thanks to its successful control implementation. Only some of the allrounder capabilities are slightly left behind.

The HP Omen 17 is more than capable of playing AAA titles at high settings with a smooth refresh rate and practically no retained heat, thanks to an impressively effective thermal design. That said, this isn’t the laptop you should buy if high-quality, loud speakers or a satisfyingly clicky keyboard are important to you. The Alienware m16 R2 we reviewed, which also sports an RTX 4070 GPU, produced quite tinny sound, but its keyboard was a breath of fresh air. Its minor flaws and low battery life are easy to overlook if you’re the type of gamer who knows they’ll be connecting headphones, a mouse, and other peripherals for a better experience and won’t play unplugged because it often means sacrificing higher frame rates. If all you care about is overall performance and you’d prefer a gaming laptop with a minimalist look (and you don’t mind a plastic chassis), I’d say the HP Omen 17 is worth it.

HP’s Omen 17 (2024) provides a solid overall experience at its modest price point, offering a solid core of an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS and an RTX 4070 which offer some beefy performance both in benchmarks and in games at 1080p. In addition, its port selection is excellent, offering a marvellous range of connectivity for everything from networking to additional devices, while it also serves up some great endurance for a gaming laptop. The 17.3-inch display here is larger, which is ideal for more immersive gaming, while its 144Hz refresh rate and Full HD resolution offer a responsive and reasonably detailed experience, even if its contrast and brightness aren’t as strong as the competition, as well as its general resolution.

Intel Raptor Lake-HX:
i9-13900HX: Mobile CPU based on the Raptor Lake series that offers 24 cores (8 performance, 16 efficiency cores) with a Boost core of up to 5.8 GHz for the P-cores. Similar to the Desktop i9-13900K but with reduced clock speeds and TDP.
AMD Hawk Point (Zen 4/4c, Ryzen 8040):
R7 8845HS: A powerful Hawk Point family chip that saw the light of day in H2 2023. We believe the 8845HS to be an R7 7840HS in disguise but with higher clock speeds on the Ryzen AI NPU. The 8845HS features 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) running at up to 5.1 GHz. Last but not the least, the Radeon 780M serves as the integrated GPU.
R9 8945HS: A powerful Hawk Point family APU. This isn't an entirely new laptop processor; instead, this is a rebadged R9 7940HS with higher clock speeds on the Ryzen AI NPU. The 8945HS features 8 SMT-enabled Zen 4 cores running at 4.0 GHz to 5.2 GHz for a total of 16 processing threads. In terms of graphics, the top-of-the-line Radeon 780M iGPU is onboard that will make occasional gaming sessions a lot more pleasant.
