Dell's XPS 15 receives a lot of attention that other manufacturers would like to get as well. Of course HP would also like to compete with Dell's premium laptop. So HP has introduced a device that aims to impress with a unibody case, business features, and powerful components into the market. Find out in our extensive review, whether the new EliteBook 1050 G1 succeeds in this.

All in all, if you’re looking for an alternative to the Dell XPS 15 and Asus Zenbook Pro with more business-friendly features such as a proper webcam and more security options, as well as a big battery, dual Thunderbolt 3 and dual-storage, the HP EliteBook 1050 looks like it could be something to keep in mind. Just try to get your company to pay for it instead. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme is another alternative to consider, with a plethora of business features as well, lighter construction, smaller battery and more affordable price.

HP EliteBook 1050 G1-4NC55UT
HP has introduced a new high-end laptop aimed at demanding users. The new EliteBook 1050 G1 notebook comes with Intel’s Coffee Lake CPUs with up to six cores, a discrete GeForce GTX 1050 GPU (in select configurations), and may be outfitted with a 4K LCD. Like all Elite-branded systems, the EliteBook 1050 was designed with requirements of various enterprises and government agencies in mind, so it may be equipped with encrypted storage and other advanced security features, including a TPM 2.0 module and an encrypted fingerprint reader. Meanwhile, the EliteBook 1050 PCs offer far higher performance than mainstream 15.6-inch machines: the G1-4NC55UT configurations will be powered by Intel’s six-core Core i7-8750H processor (even entry-level configs feature quad-core CPUs), NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1050 graphics chip with 4 GB of GDDR5 VRAM (selected SKUs), 16 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, and 256 GB PCIe/NVMe storage. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz. Display options that HP plans to offer with the EliteBook 1050 G1 deserve a special mentioning. It is equipped with an anti-glare FHD display panel featuring 400 nits of brightness. The systems designed for people who value privacy will be outfitted with an anti-glare FHD panel featuring HP’s Sure View privacy screen coating and a 650 nits brightness to make the LCD comfortable to use in various conditions. The displays with the EliteBook 1050 G1 use IPS technology, cover 100 % of the sRGB color gamut and are equipped with an ambient light sensor to adjust their brightness automatically. When it comes to audio and conferencing capabilities, the EliteBook 1050 G1 is equipped with a 720p webcam (with or without a privacy hatch), IR sensors, a microphone array with noise cancellation capabilities, a speaker system co-developed with Bang & Olufsen featuring integrated amplifiers, and a keyboard with controls for Skype calls. HP offers the EliteBook 1050 G1 with a 64 Wh or a 95.6 Wh battery. In the best case scenario, the laptop will work for 16 hours on one charge. Moving on to connectivity. Like many other 2018 HP Elite-branded machines, the new EliteBook 1050 laptops feature Intel’s dual-band Wireless-AC 9560 CRF solution that supports 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi with up to 1.73 Gbps throughput as well as Bluetooth 5.0. In addition, the new notebooks also feature NXP’s NPC300 I2C NCI NFC controller. As for wired connectors, the EliteBook 1050 G1 comes with two Thunderbolt 3 headers, two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI output, an SD card reader, and a TRRS audio jack. The EliteBook 1050 G1-4 NC55UT is a good laptop for business users who also need to do a bit of photo or video editing. Gaming is possible but if that is your preference, there are many other gaming laptops out there. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

HP's EliteBook 1050 G1 is large and heavy, and won't easily fit into a bag or backpack. With a 15.6-inch screen and a discrete Nvidia GPU option, it's well suited to running graphically demanding applications. The build quality is solid, so if this laptop does have to travel, it should be well protected. Battery life is impressive, too, and the EliteBook 1050 G1 even has a decent audio subsystem, which is something of a rarity for a laptop.

The HP EliteBook 1050 G1 doesn’t quite have the panache or the screen quality of some of its rivals, but it does have more business features, better battery life and solid, consistent performance. It’s cheaper than its rivals, too, and it’s ideal for work where colour accuracy isn’t paramount – or where privacy is key.

A powerful battery and a solid privacy feature make the EliteBook 1050 G1 a great choice for office work – but it’s found wanting for other tasks.

HP has taken the EliteBook game one step ahead with their 1050 G1. If you haven’t checked our review of the EliteBook 850 G5 we suggest you do that in the first place, so you can understand the difference between them. Despite the more professional look of the EliteBook 850 G5 with its designated dock port, we see the 1050 G1 as a more potent device.
