HP Dev One laptop with Pop!_OS available for US$1,099
It is not too often that a big laptop brand offers Linux-based models these days. It is even more so surprising when HP chooses to ship its new Dev One laptops with the Pop!_OS distribution initially developed by System76. The OS is open source, but, unlike the usual Ubuntu variants, it offers more robust developer tools and additional security features. Besides System76, HP is now the only laptop OEM to offer systems pre-loaded with the Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS distribution.
As far as the hardware configuration goes, HP is equipping the Dev One with a Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U APU that integrates a Radeon Vega 8 GPU, yet, for the most part, this model is designed for budget-oriented developers. By default, the system offers 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM and 1 TB of NVMe PCIe 3.0 storage, and users can further upgrade these specs if need be. The 14-inch display is limited to 1080p but it is HDR-ready with 1,000 nit peak brightness.
Port selection includes 2x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 + 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 connectors, an HDMI 2.0 video output and an audio jack. The Dev One also supports Wi-Fi 6 and BT 5.0 connectivity. The backlit keyboard is spill-resistant and the webcam comes with a 720p sensor plus dual mic array. The system features a smaller 53 Wh battery so it is fairly light at 3.24 lbs (1.47 kg).
The HP Dev One is now available for US$1,099. It would be interesting to see if the Dev One becomes a lineup refreshed on a yearly basis. Maybe next year, HP could add multiple processor options for increased flexibility.
