With any entry-level laptop, the first order of business is to figure out which features were sacrificed in order to hit a bargain-basement price. Sluggish performance is usually the deal breaker for an entry-level laptop, and though the single-core Compaq Presario CQ62-215DX is far from a speed merchant, its biggest flaw isn't a lack of power but rather the finger power it requires to depress the stiff mouse button.

Barely more expensive than a decently configured Netbook, the $449 Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX looks like a good bargain at first, with its 16:9 screen and separate number pad, but this is a case where spending a little more can pay big dividends. As stripped-down as a laptop gets, the Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX is saddled with slow performance and a weak battery. There are better entry-level options out there.

With a suggested price of $550 and prices available near $500 at times, the Compaq Presario CQ60-220us is certainly a very affordable system. The pricing makes it a good choice for those looking to get more than what is available in the netbook arena. While it may not have as large or a hard drive, as much memory or even many expansion capabilities, it does work well for a basic computer for Internet usage or productivity with some multimedia use.

This Compaq offers great value for money and may be the best laptop we've seen at this price. Rounding out the package is an impressive suite of software that includes market-leading tools for home office use and internet security, making the CQ60- 214EM by far one of the best laptops you can buy at this price, and one that we can easily recommend very highly.

HP's CQ60 is a stylish and usable entry-level media centre, but office performance is poor.
HP's consumer Pavilion range has often impressed us with its stunning designs, sturdy build quality and great usability. The Compaq Presario CQ60-313SA aims to provide a similar quality at a lower price, and does so in style, despite minor shortcomings. Despite its flaws, the Compaq Presario CQ60-313SA is an excellent laptop with plenty to recommend it. Just bear the limited performance in mind.70

In our Back-to-School retail laptop roundup, we've taken a look at a few real bargain-basement machines. Along with the Toshiba Satellite L305-S5955, the Compaq Presario CQ60-417DX comes in at less than $400. Although it's fifty dollars more than the Satellite L305-S5955, it also has a larger, 15.6-inch, higher-resolution 16:9 screen, comes with a Windows 7-upgrade-eligible Windows Vista Home Premium OS, and has a keyboard and touch pad that were far more comfortable for us. Saddled with a processor that's bottom-tier, the CQ60-417DX is a budget laptop with the chassis of a superior machine but the guts of an inferior one.

Now available at Walmart, the 15.6-inch Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM will meet bare-bones computing needs for a starting price of $298, which is actually cheaper than most netbooks. It is bulky, so don't expect to take it everywhere, but its cost and capabilities will satisfy those who need a laptop but don’t want all the trimmings and trappings that come with most standard-fare products. With a nice big screen and excellent video and audio quality, the CQ60-419WM will take care of your basic Web-surfing, word-processing, photo-viewing, TV-streaming, and DVD-playing needs. For $300, you get a 15.6-inch screen, a 160GB hard drive, and a DVD burner—all in a laptop that’s not an embarrassment to you. It's definitely worth checking out.

Compaq's CQ60-420us is an updated version of their extremely affordable laptop. With a price tag around $500, it is certainly going to attract a fair number of buyers. The problem is that Compaq didn't redesign the basic CQ60 chassis leaving it with a below average number of peripheral connectors. The system also does not have support for the faster 802.11n wireless networking that puts it at a disadvantage to many laptops in the same class. If these aren't necessarily issues for the user, the system will work fine for the average user.

Priced at just $529.98 (list), the Compaq Presario CQ60 (420us) is easily one of the most affordable 15-inch notebooks around. This no-frills system won't wow you with multimedia features (it lacks an HDMI port and a webcam, among other things), and its performance is mostly underwhelming. However, it delivers adequate horsepower for typical home productivity use, features a bright 15.6-inch widescreen display, and is light enough for short hops. The Compaq Presario CQ60 (420us) lacks some of the features found on other 15-inch models, and its performance is nothing to write home about, but bargain hunters will love its sub-$500 price tag.

The Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX follows the tried-and-true budget laptop formula, supplying an Intel Celeron processor, 2GB of RAM, integrated Intel graphics, a 250GB hard drive, and a 15.6-inch display for a bargain basement price. In fact, this $349 laptop features the same core specs as the Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975, which sold for $330 when we reviewed it last fall. The Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX covers the basics, and that's really all you can ask for from a $349 laptop.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS: Slower clocked 9300M GS and therefore a little bit slower. Supports PureVideo HD (VP3)and Hybrid-SLI (HybridPower and GeForceBoost).
NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G: The 8200 MG is a reduced 9100M G (only Single Channel memory and only PureVideo HD VP2).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T3200: Entry-level dual core processor with a slow performance due to the old Merom core and a small level 2 cache.
T3400: Merom based entry-level Pentium Dual-Core processor with some reduced power saving functions compared to Core 2 Duo CPUs.
T4200:
Entry class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.
AMD Athlon X2:
QL-62:
Similar to the Turion X2 CPU, but with reduced power saving functions (no deep sleep, only 2 instead of 3 P-states). Compareable to a 1.3-1.9 GHz Core 2 Duo (depending on the application).
QL-64:
Similar to the Turion X2 CPU, but with reduced power saving functions (no deep sleep, only 2 instead of 3 P-states). Compareable to a 1.3-2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo (depending on the application).
Intel Celeron Dual-Core: The Intel Celeron Dual-Core familiy consists out of dual core CPUs for cheap laptops. Compared to the Celeron M single core family the biggest advantage (in addition to the second core) is the Enhanced Speedstep function, which enables the notebook to downclock the CPU in Idle mode. Therefore, the current consumption can be much lower. Compared to the Core (2) Duo or Pentium Dual-Core processors, the Celeron Cual-Core features much less L2 Cache which leads to a lower performance per clock.
T1600:
Merom based dual core processor with a reduced feature set (power saving functions, virtualization features) with a small level 2 cache.
Intel Celeron M: It is a Pentium M with halved level 2 Cache and limited on FSB 400. The characteristic of this processor is the speed, which is hardly slower than an equivalent Pentium M. However it can change the speed not dynamically like the Pentium M and therefore needs without load more current.
It is also available as Low Voltage Version with very small current consumption.
900: Single core processor based on the Penryn core but many advanced features are deactivated. Due to the missing Speedstep, the CPU may lead to a lower battery runtime.
AMD Mobile Sempron: 2800+ to 3000+ mobile Athlon 64 with reduced level 2 Cache; The rating is not comparable with Athlon 64 Rating. A 3000+ Athlon 64 is faster than a 3000+ Sempron. There is no 64 bit support.
Especially: Sempron 2100+, socket S1, 9 Watt TDP, 1 GHz
SI-40:
Slow entry level single core processor based on the Sable core.

2.75 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.1 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
66.53%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
