Google is planning an answer to the AI boom: a premium search function supported by AI could soon become a reality - but not for free.

AI is on the rise, and Google is taking note. The search engine behemoth finds itself in a precarious position, needing to ensure it isn't overshadowed by AI-driven search engines. Microsoft's Bing, which has already incorporated ChatGPT and the Copilot assistant, represents growing competition, showcasing the urgency for Google to innovate and stay ahead in the evolving landscape of search technologies. According to a report by the Financial Times (paywall), which cites three anonymous sources, Google is already working on a solution - namely an AI-supported search function.

According to the insider sources, the new AI search function will not replace the normal Google search function, but will be a kind of additional premium search that will not be free for users. The normal Google search function will not change. In future, however, the best search results may only be available for a fee.

Whether the paid premium search is offered in the form of a separate subscription or integrated into existing services such as Google One or Gemini Advanced is not known - nor is the price that Google will charge for it. According to the Financial Times report, however, it is known that the company does not want to make the AI search free of advertising. Although the search function is subject to a charge, users will still be shown advertisements.
