Many smartphone manufacturers now offer up to three years of software updates with flagship smartphones, arguably pioneered by Google. Typically, this corresponds to three OS updates, a far cry from the coverage that Apple provides with iPhones. Nonetheless, three OS updates are much better than the one or two updates that LG, Samsung and Xiaomi previously afforded its devices.
With the Pixel 6 series, Google confirmed that it would be upping its commitments to five years of software updates. However, it did not specify if this meant security patch updates or OS updates. For example, we would not have ruled out five years of security patch updates and three OS updates.
According to @_snoopytech_, five years of software updates translates to four OS upgrades and five years of security patches. Google will release the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro running Android 12, so both should receive OS updates until Android 16.
If that is the case, then the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro's software support will even outlast the Fairphone 4's. The Pixel 6 series will debut on October 19.
