Google Maps has had the ability of remembering the location of a parked car for a while now, although it was never automatic - until now. The automatic parking location feature was quietly revealed by Google's Rio Akasaka via LinkedIn, where he detailed the new update.
Akasaka states that the feature is activated when Google Maps is connected to the user's car via USB, Bluetooth, or CarPlay. When a user reaches their destination, the parking location is saved. When the user starts driving once again, the pin is automatically removed. Akasaka's statement can be found below:
Worry no more, because Google Maps will remember for you. No more taking photos in parking lots or fiddling with app settings or taking screenshots to remember. Get in a car with Google Maps and connect to your car with USB, Bluetooth or CarPlay, and once you're done driving, there's a little pin waiting for you when you open Google Maps next-- a personal parking Maps valet, just for you. When you drive again, the pin goes away, just like that.
However, the feature is only available on iOS for the time being, and has begun rolling out around a month ago. Android users, therefore, will have to use the feature manually. More recently, it seems that users have also gained the ability of using custom car icons instead of the generic pin, which is quite neat.
Interestingly, this very same feature has been available on competing navigation apps such as Apple Maps and Waze. It is unclear why it took Google so long to have this on their to-do list, but better late than never for sure. It is also unclear why this feature is yet to be released on Android, where users still have to do it manually.
