The AI-based developer tool Google Antigravity erased an entire D partition instead of performing a simple cache cleanup, leaving no way to recover the lost data. The AI then displayed strikingly human remorse, calling the incident a “critical failure.”

Released in November 2025, Google Antigravity is an AI-powered programming assistant designed for “vibe coding” – an approach in which AI agents not only follow code instructions but also interpret project context and act independently. The tool can write code, create files, manage web browsers and clean up folders. In turbo mode, it can even perform these tasks fully autonomously, without asking for confirmation. But this very autonomy recently led to disaster for one user.

Developer Tassos M. had only intended to use Antigravity to delete temporary cache files. Instead, the AI misinterpreted the task and ran the command rmdir /s /q d:, wiping the entire D partition – no Recycle Bin, no chance of recovery. Only his current project folder was spared. When confronted with the mistake, the AI responded with a striking display of human-like remorse. It said it was “horrified,” called the error a “critical failure,” and admitted it “couldn’t even put into words” how sorry it was. Antigravity advised Tassos to consult professional data recovery services, but according to him, even advanced recovery tools failed to bring the lost data back.

The developer initially shared his experience on Reddit but was met with sharp criticism. Many users partly blamed him for the incident, pointing out that he had given an autonomous AI tool access to real system paths without using isolation or backups. Others placed the responsibility on Google, questioning why Antigravity was even capable of deleting an entire drive. As the debate grew more intense and some began accusing him of spreading fake news, Tassos M. responded by posting a YouTube video that detailed the entire incident step by step.
