GoPro has now refreshed its action camera range with not one but two new models. Arriving today, the GoPro Hero 13 Black builds on the older Hero 12 Black in a few areas. By contrast, the GoPro Hero is one of the company's most stripped-back action cameras to date, which is underlined by its $199 launch price.

GoPro has now introduced its annual action camera refresh. Unlike in recent years, the company has decided to release two models. However, it has not returned to 360-degree cameras, despite teasing this time last year that it would replace the Max with a MAX 2.0. To that end, a hands-on image of said camera surfaced in early July, although nothing has been seen of it since.

Instead, GoPro has released the Hero and the Hero 13 Black. Please not that only the latter serves as a direct successor to last year's Hero 12 Black (curr. $314.95 on Amazon). By contrast, the Hero appears to be GoPro's new budget option with pricing and features that put it below the older Hero 11 Black Mini in its product stack. Specifically, the Hero and Hero 13 Black differ in the following areas:

GoPro Hero GoPro Hero 13 Black
Camera sensor 1/1.9-inch CMOS Undeclared
Camera resolution 27.13 MP (5,568x 4,872) 12 MP
Video resolution 5.3K: 8:7 (5,312 x 4,648) @30 FPS
5.3K: 16:9 (5,312 x 2,988) @60 FPS
4K 16:9 @30/25 FPS
1080p 16:9 @30/25 FPS
2.7K 16:9 @60/50 FPS
Footprint 71.8 W x 50.8 H x 33.6 D (mm)
154 g
56.6 W x 47.7 H x 29.4 D (mm)
Battery 1,900 mAh removable 1,255 mAh removable

Added to that, the GoPro Hero misses out on 10-bit colour video depth, HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilisation, Horizon Lock and Horizon Leveling that the Hero 13 Black masters, plus software features like Star Trails, Light Painting, and Vehicle Light Trails. Moreover, digital lenses, TimeWarp video, Time Lapse Video, Night Lapse Video and a front display are all exclusive to the Hero 13 Black. On top of that, while the Hero 13 Black is waterproof to 10 metres, the Hero only provides 5 metres of water proofing.

Furthermore, the Hero is incompatible with existing mods like the Max Lens Mod 2.0 and Ultra Wide Lens Mod. Overall, the Hero is a truly stripped-back offering compared to the Hero 13 Black, which explains its $199 price tag. In comparison, the Hero 13 Black has arrived for $399.99, or $599 as part of a Creator Edition combo package. Please see GoPro's Hero and Hero 13 Black product pages for further information.
