The Aero 17 HDR XB is another strong model in Gigabyte’s powerful hybrid laptop lineup. The key feature is a very bright and colorful 4K 17.3-inch HDR display. As usual, it has an understated design that hides great specs, including Intel’s 8-core i7-10875H CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q graphics. That helps it fly for both video editing or gaming. It is a bit heavy, though and has a poorly positioned webcam.

Lisa Gade reviews the 2020 Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR (model XB) with Intel 10th gen Core i7 and Core i9 CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 2070 and 2080 Super Max-Q graphics (RTX 2060 on the base model). The HDR model has a 17.3” wide gamut 4K IPS HDR 400 display (an OLED model is also available). The gaming laptop has staid looks and is also designed for 2D and particularly 3D content creators. The machine is relatively slim and light, yet it packs a high capacity 94 WHr battery. It has Thunderbolt 3, 2 M.2 SSD slots, 2 RAM slots, Ethernet, a full size SD card slot and more. Their Fusion per key RGB backlit keyboard is standard, as is a MS Precision trackpad. It benchmarks well and offers the expected high fps in games.

The Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XB is an impressive powerhouse. The new Intel 10th Gen CPU offers tremendous speed – it’s almost able to match the Core i9 CPU in the more expensive MacBook Pro 16, and it easily outpaces equivalent 9th Gen chips. Gigabyte’s machine easily beats the Apple notebook for graphical pace, too. This notebook will handle virtually any high-end work task, and arguably offers more balance than the MacBook. You’ll only find more power by searching out workstation-level CPUs and professional graphics chips.

The Gigabyte Aero 17 deploys Intel’s 10th Gen CPUs for huge work ability, and it has a great screen. It’s not the slimmest and lightest machine though, and battery life is middling.

The Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR is packed with incredible power and has a superb screen – and none of its issues are too serious. It doesn't quite sate every scenario – and it's hardly cheap. Nevertheless, the Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR is an ideal laptop for work tasks and a decent alternative to the Razer Blade Studio Edition and MacBook Pro.

It’s far from perfect: We didn’t get into the fan noise, but let’s say they’re often loud when set to the gaming profile, and border on being too loud. The speakers are nothing special. And don't forget the nose cam.

There are a few niggles that remain - noise levels continue to frustrate, the webcam needs moving, and 10th Gen Core is only a mild upgrade - yet with comprehensive connectivity, a full-size keyboard and decent battery life, Aero 17 HDR gets plenty right. Better still, renewed competition has led to a re-think on pricing, and though £2,700 remains a significant chunk of change, the 2020 model is considerably more affordable than its predecessor.

We’ll end this by pointing out the obvious: Ryzen 4000 isn’t going away. Everything we’ve seen tells us it will shake up the laptop world as we have never seen before.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q: High-End laptop graphics card based on the TU104 chip with 2,560 shaders.
