RPG Maker MZ isn’t a game in the traditional sense – it’s a development tool that lets you create classic 2D role-playing games without any programming knowledge. While it doesn’t support complex 3D projects, you can build charming 2D RPGs with custom mechanics and a unique story. Character stats, enemies, items and skills are handled through an intuitive editor, and maps are created using a modular system. The story is driven by an event system, and core RPG features like battles and inventory are already included.

RPG Maker MZ also includes a wide range of built-in graphics and music assets, so you can dive straight into creating a playable project. Sample games and their project files are available in the Steam Workshop to help you get started. Once your game is finished, you can play it directly in RPG Maker MZ or export it to share with others. RPG Maker MZ has received around 2,100 reviews on Steam, with 85% positive. Users particularly appreciate how easy it is to create their own RPG – thanks to a clear tutorial and a range of helpful features. One common criticism, however, is that adding external content can be quite difficult.

Free to play for a short time

The RPG Maker Festival is currently running on Steam, and as part of the event, RPG Maker MZ is free to try until February 16. Normally priced at $79.99, now might be a good opportunity to explore the software at no cost. Access ends after the trial, but exported games remain yours. The tool is available at 60% off until February 23 if you want to keep using it. One limitation: RPG Maker MZ isn’t compatible with the Steam Deck (currently $650 on Amazon).
