Galaxy S24 could get native FSR support thanks to collaboration between Samsung, Qualcomm and AMD
AI-based upscalers have been all the rage since Nvidia showed off DLSS with the RTX 2000 series. It didn't take long for the tech to trickle down to mobile devices, with Qualcomm and Apple announcing Snapdragon Game Super Resolution and Metal FX shortly after. Now, a tipster states that AMD, Qualcomm and Samsung have teamed up to give Apple a run for their money.
@Tech_Reve states that the trio has teamed up to fine-tune AMD's FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) for Galaxy smartphones. The feature will be combined with raytracing "in the future". There is a high chance it will debut alongside the Galaxy S24 series next year to keep up with Apple's commitment to bring AAA console games to iPhones.
Furthermore, both the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy's GPUs support hardware-based raytracing. That, combined with a powerful CPU, should be able to deliver a 1080p 60 FPS experience for some older titles. Unlike Nvidia, AMD does not leverage the power of AI for FSR. This puts it at a disadvantage against DLSS, which uses artificial intelligence and tailor-made Tensor cores for the purpose.
While the collaboration might initially spell doom for the current generation of MediaTek chips, the situation might change in the future. The Taiwanese chipmaker has been getting friendlier with Nvidia, and it is only a matter of time before GeForce GPUs (and DLSS, etc) make their way to high-end Dimensity chips.
