Deal | Freshly launched Samsung 990 EVO 2 TB PCIe 5.0 SSD drops by 24%
The Samsung 990 EVO launched as the first-ever SSD with a hybrid interface. It debuted at the end of last month with a price tag of $209.99 for 2 TB and $124.99 for 1 TB. But the 2 TB variant is already enjoying a hefty discount, dropping to $159.99 on Amazon. That basically equates to a generous 24% price cut.
This new Samsung EVO SSD brings the PCIe Gen 5 support that most competitors are making a big push in. However, even with the support for the latest solid-state drive architecture, its speed is still in the PCIe 4 range.
That's mainly because the PCIe 5 interface of the 990 EVO is limited to two lanes. To compare, the fastest PCIe Gen 5 SSD, which is currently the Crucial T700 (available in Amazon), sports 4x PCIe 5.0 lanes. The T700's higher storage options can offer up to 12,4000 MB/s of read speed and 11,800 MB/s of write speed.
As for the Samsung 990 EVO, the SSD can offer up to 5,000 MB/s of sequential read speed and 4,200 MB/s of sequential write speed. In other words, the transfer speeds aren't better than the fastest PCIe 4.0-only SSDs. But it's still an upgrade over the predecessors, the 970 EVO and 970 EVO Plus (1 TB curr. $89.95 on Amazon).
Moreover, the hybrid PCIe 5 and PCIe 4 interface means that the new 990 EVO SSD works with both architectures. Also, this hybrid interface nature will come in handy in systems with no free Gen 4 slot but have a 2x Gen 5 slot available. You can learn more about the solid-state drive from the video attached below.
