Distant Space, an 1980s-style video game in the same vein as Space Invaders, is now free on Steam until October 31, 2025.
The lightweight 2D game has the player controlling a spaceship located at the bottom of the screen. External Xbox controllers can be used to move the spaceship side to side while zapping the attacking extraterrestrials overhead. The graphics are completely monochrome, similar to Asteroids, while the music resembles other game music of that era.
The game was released in 2016 by PixelMouse and has garnered an 82% rating out of 462 reviews on Steam, with players noting the 26 levels could be completed in short order, but left a good impression.
The video game only requires a PC running Windows 7, a 1 GHz CPU, and 2GB of RAM. However, the Steam Client for downloading the title requires Windows 10 or higher along with its higher system requirements. Some users have suggested downgrading the client, while others have suggested visiting Steam with a web browser to download games on older OSs, but it is unknown whether these methods will work for Windows 7 users.
Readers still on a Windows 7 PC might want to consider upgrading to a faster, top-rated handheld gaming PC, like the Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme (sold here on Amazon).
