Ford Transit City: New 1-ton EV van with chassis cab option unveiled

Ford Pro is entering the compact commercial vehicle market. The Cologne-based company is launching the new Transit City, an electric van specially designed for delivery services and tradespeople in urban areas. The front-wheel-drive vehicle will launch at the end of the year in two panel van versions and—for the first time in the 1-tonne segment—as a single-cab chassis for individual conversions.
In the top L2H2 version, the Transit City can carry a payload of up to 1,275 kilograms. It has a load volume of around eight cubic metres and a loading length of over three metres. The shorter L1H1 variant can accommodate three Euro pallets. Propulsion is provided by a 150 hp electric motor.
Efficient fleet charging instead of expensive overcapacity
Examining the battery and charging specifications reveals that Ford has tailored the technology precisely for commercial use. According to the datasheet, the built-in 56 kWh battery with robust LFP technology offers an impressive range of 254 km — over twice the average daily driving distance in this segment.
Commercial fleets typically charge their vehicles overnight at the depot. The standard 11 kW onboard charger is sufficient for this purpose. This means that a full charge at the end of a shift takes four and a half hours. A more expensive 22 kW charger would also be useful for a quick top-up while on the road, but if time is of the essence during the tour, the electric van can still draw a maximum of 87 kW at the DC fast charger.
This should charge the Transit City battery from 10 to 80 percent in 33 minutes. Ford delivers the electric van from the factory equipped with One-Pedal-Drive, heated seats, a 12-inch touchscreen, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The car manufacturer has extended the service intervals to two years or 40,000 kilometres, and the high-voltage battery comes with an eight-year warranty.
