The first hands-on images of the Mate 60 have surfaced online, likely a month or two before Huawei announces its next flagship smartphone series. Surprisingly, the Mate 60 resembles the Mate 40, despite Huawei releasing the Mate 50 series in between.

Hands-on pictures of an early Huawei Mate 60 unit have leaked online, seemingly first on Weibo. Upon first glance Huawei's next flagship resembles one of the older models in its portfolio, namely the Mate 40. Surprisingly, Huawei continues to include text in the middle of the camera housing too, despite the end of its cooperation with Leica.

In its place sits 'XMAGE', Huawei's in-house camera optimisation software. Conversely, the Mate 50 lacked any such branding, the Pro version of which impressed us when we reviewed it last year. Nonetheless, the Mate 60 appears to retain a triple rear-facing camera setup, which Huawei has offered on its entry-level flagship since the Mate 20.

The Mate 60 series could see the return of native 5G connectivity for Huawei smartphones as well, courtesy of a partnership with SMIC. Other details about the Mate 60 remain unknown for now, including a release date. Typically, Huawei unveils new Mate series smartphones in September or October though, with the Mate 50 series debuting on September 6.
