Firefox adds free built-in VPN with 50 GB data cap in new update

Mozilla just outlined a set of new features for its upcoming Firefox 148 and 149 updates, with a built-in VPN being one of the more important additions. While we already knew of Firefox 148 getting AI controls, Mozilla’s latest update details more features in Firefox 149.
The company confirmed that a free VPN will be integrated directly into the browser, so users won't need to use a separate VPN or install extensions. Mozilla also adds that the VPN is designed around its existing data principles and privacy policies. According to the announcement, users will get 50 GB of data per month under the free tier. The rollout will initially be limited to users in the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and will be available starting March 24 as part of Firefox 149.
However, this is not Firefox’s first foray into VPN services. Mozilla already offers a paid VPN product, but this update introduces a built-in, limited free tier directly within the browser.
For reference, Firefox 148 introduced new AI controls within settings for users to disable or manage AI-related features in February. Considering a big percentage of internet users are still very divided regarding AI features being shoved down their throats, this should be a welcome move. The company says this applies to both current and future AI integrations.
Firefox 149 also brings a Split View feature, similar to browsers like Zen. Users can now view two tabs side-by-side in a single window. Additional updates include changes to privacy and security interfaces, along with improvements to accessibility features such as better screen reader support for PDFs.
