The Fiat 500e was the most registered new BEV in Western Europe in Q2 this year, above Tesla’s Model 3. The study, conducted by market analyst Matthias Schmidt, noted that this was the first time since Q4 2020 when Tesla was not in the top spot; on that occasion, it was the Volkswagen ID.3 that placed first.
The 42 kWh battery model of the Fiat 500e hatchback has up to 199 miles (~320 km) range on a single charge. The battery level can be topped up by 30 miles (~48 km) in 5 minutes when you use 85 kW fast charging, and charging from 0 to 80% takes 35 minutes. The vehicle has an 87 kW motor providing a 0 to 100 kph (~60 mph) acceleration time of 9 seconds.
Also beating Tesla was Polestar, which saw volumes of the Polestar 2 surpass the Tesla Model 3. Both companies have suffered production problems in China during the quarter due to Covid restrictions in the area. In general, the Western European market saw a drop in BEV volumes in Q2, partly due to Tesla’s low production levels from its Shanghai factory.
The study also reported that SUV-crossover vehicles continue to be popular, with six out of ten consumers opting for these BEV models in June. This could, in part, be due to the market, where 40% of the BEV models on offer were SUV/Crossovers.
