The Ray-Ban Meta Glasses (approx. $329 on Amazon) come with a 12 MP camera, five microphones and speakers, allowing the device to capture photos and videos, play music, and respond to voice commands. According to Bloomberg, Meta is planning to launch a much more versatile model, codenamed Hypernova, by the end of 2025.
The Hypernova is expected to cost between $1,000 and $1,400. To justify the higher price, Meta is set to incorporate a display at the bottom right corner of the right lens. A Hypernova 2 is also rumoured to launch in 2027, featuring displays for both eyes. The built-in display should make the Hypernova much more versatile than the Meta Ray-Ban Glasses because apps can now be projected into the wearer’s field of view. For example, as with Google Glass, users can potentially view navigation apps or incoming messages without having to check their smartphone or smartwatch.
Reports suggest the glasses can be operated using a touch-sensitive surface on the temple, with Meta also planning to release a wristband to enable hand gesture control. The Hypernova will reportedly feature a smartphone-like user interface with a homescreen for selecting apps and launch with at least a camera app, a navigation app, a gallery app, and an app store for third-party software. Notifications from a paired smartphone can also be displayed on the screen.
