As far as features go, the Dell Inspiron 17R-2211OBK ($799.98 list) is decidedly average for a 17.3-inch laptops. But dig just below the surface and you'll find above-average performance for this desktop replacement. Currently available at Staples, the 17R-2211OBK provides the standard features you'll find in any number of 17.3-inch laptops, but where it excels is in performance. Other than that, there's not much that makes the 17R-2211OBK standout from the competition. As long as performance isn't your top priority, you can find more feature-rich laptops for not much more than what the 17R-2211OBK sells for.

Special Edition! Apart from the name, our test device no longer has much in common with the older generation models that we have reviewed. The newest hardware technology is packed in a new outfit. The add-on SE standing for “Special Edition” refers to the extra performance reserves as well as the high quality components in contrast to the standard Inspiron 17R.

Calling the Dell Inspiron 17R a desktop replacement is a little unfair, since it's not really in the league of the performance desktops that dominate the category. The Inspiron 17R is a solid machine if you're looking for a large screen on a budget, but you have to be aware that it won't perform like similarly sized machines, such as the Origin EON17-S, or the Alienware M17x. But if you're looking for a low-cost desktop replacement for a shared living room PC, the Inspiron 17R is definitely worth a look.

The Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition is an attractive desktop replacement laptop offering serious productivity chops and enough graphics muscle to satisfy all but the most demanding gamers. Its 17.3-inch screen is ideal for watching movies and playing games, and its audio output, while not stellar, is still better than what you get with most laptops. Other than a smattering of bloatware, the Inspiron 17R Special Edition's only shortcomings are its weak battery life and lack of a Blu-ray drive. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580, on the other hand, delivers similar performance, has a stronger battery, and it comes with a Blu-ray drive, which is why it remains our Editors' Choice for media laptops.

The cheap feel is our biggest bugbear with Dell’s super-sized laptop, though. The single year of on-site warranty might be enough for many people, but with the Asus N56VM trading all-out speed for better build and more assured ergonomics, we’d think long and hard before splashing out on the Inspiron.

Dell crams a lot into the Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 for a rather affordable price. For $1,099, consumers walk away with a 17-inch notebook that has a bright full HD display, powerful graphics for playing the latest games and a robust suite of software for content creation and consumption. While the sound isn't best in class and the design is on the husky side, overall this multimedia notebook shines.

Dell has made a real beast of a laptop. Weighing in at over 3kg and with a 17.3in display the Inspiron 17R is designed as a desktop-replacement model that won't leave the house often, if ever. The touchpad and the bundled software are disappointing and the chunky design won't suit everyone, but if you want a powerful laptop for use around the home then the Dell Inspiron 17R is a good value choice.

My initial thought on seeing this new Dell Inspiron 17R SE pulled from its box for the first time was, "Wow, does anyone still make laptops this big?" It's doubly surprising, as we've talked about the latest generation of Dell Inspiron laptops at some length, usually to point out how thin and attractive they are, at least for budget-minded laptops. Dell's Inspiron 17R SE packs reasonably high-end parts into a budget-feeling chassis, saving a few hundred dollars or more over similarly configured laptops.

The battery life is underwhelming, but that’s the only real weakness in the Inspiron 17R SE. Its strong performance and large, attractive screen enable it to handle a wide range of tasks. Certainly, it will be a good choice for anyone that needs a desktop-replacement machine for the office or a versatile entertainment system at home.

Honestly, today we showed you a good all-rounded device. It does exactly what it is supposed to as a home multimedia laptop and even gives you the opportunity to do some developer work if you pair it with enough memory. We were more impressed, however, by the IPS panel (AUO B173HAN01.3 (AUO139D)) of this laptop. In fact, we were happy to see an IPS display on a device like this in general, and after we did our lab tests on it we can declare that it is one of the best panels for a budget 17-incher. It is very bright, has a decent contrast ratio, its viewing angles are excellent and it doesn’t use PWM to adjust screen brightness. On top of that, it covers 93% of sRGB and with the help of our Gaming and Web design profile it gets right on par with the appropriate dE standard for design work.

It's a shame the Inspiron 17 3000 lacks a USB-C port, but otherwise this laptop does what it sets out to do. It doesn't skimp with 4GB of RAM or a chintzy 1,366-by-768 display. It doesn't pretend to be very portable or game-worthy, but it gives you a big, if not dazzling screen, a DVD drive, and capable performance.

What could we say, guys, the build quality is not the best, the I/O doesn’t include a Thunderbolt connector, and there is something to be left in terms of its performance. However, things like the SD card reader, comfortable to type keyboard and IPS panel option help the Inspiron 17 3793 to float above the surface.

Dell: Dell Inc. is a multinational technology corporation that develops, manufactures, sells, and supports personal computers and other computer-related products. Based in Texas, Dell employs more than 82,700 people worldwide (2009). In 2006, Dell purchased the computer hardware manufacturer Alienware. In most countries, the laptops are directly sold to consumers by Dell and each notebook custom-assembled according to a selection of options. In 2014, the global market share of Dell laptops was 12.3% and it is 14% in 2016.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M: A mid-range GPU and the fastest GeForce GT as part of the 600M series
AMD Radeon 520: Entry level graphics card with 320 shaders (5 compute units), 2 GB GDDR5 and a 64 Bit memory bus. Uses the same chip as the old Radeon R7 M230, M340, M440 and e.g. Radeon R7 M445 (28nm GCN).
Intel UHD Graphics G1 (Ice Lake 32 EU): Integrated graphics card in Intel Ice-Lake G1 SoCs based on the new Gen. 11 architecture with 32 of the 64 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model ranging from 300 MHz base to 1050 - 1100 MHz boost. The Ice-Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm process at Intel produced.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.

Intel Core i5:
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
3210M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz
i5-8265U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.9 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3610QM:
An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Ice Lake:
i5-1035G1: A quad-core processor of the Ice Lake product family. The i5 is designed for use in thinner, lighter laptops; it features Hyper-Threading-enabled Sunny Cove CPU cores running at 1.0 GHz to 3.6 GHz along with the 32 EU UHD Graphics G1 iGPU. Partial Wi-Fi 6 and Thunderbolt support is baked into the chip. Core i5-1035G1 is produced on Intel's first-gen 10 nm process.

2.79 kg:
In former years, this weight was representative for laptops with a 14-16 inch display-diagonal. Nowadays, 17 inch laptops weigh less than that.
