Death Stranding 2: One the Beach players report that their PS5 consoles are overheating with fans going into a frenzy while accessing the game's map screen. The actual gameplay, however, works just fine. Base PS5 users seem to be the most affected, although PS5 Pro users also attest to higher fan noise and temperatures while accessing the map.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (currently $69 on Amazon) has garnered largely positive reviews since its June 26 release. The PlayStation 5-exclusive game has earned an impressive Metacritic score of 90, and its creator Hideo Kojima expressed happiness with the scores given by reviewers.

While the game itself is selling like hot cakes on the PS5, a Reddit post by u/mudman2018 suggests some PS5 consoles are literally taking the heat running the game.

Death Stranding 2 is apparently causing some PS5 consoles to overheat while accessing the map screen. The Reddit post notes,

But as soon as I pause the game and the map screen comes up, the fan suddenly goes into overdrive and I get an overheat warning.

It’s strange because everything else runs smoothly, even during long gameplay sessions. But the moment I bring up the map and start planning a route, the fan suddenly goes crazy and I get an overheating warning.

I just cleaned the console recently and it’s in a well-ventilated spot, so airflow shouldn’t be a problem."

Others have chimed in to echo similar experiences, with one user even posting a video showing the fans ramping up to full throttle in the map screen. This issue apparently affects only the map screen as otherwise the fans operate normally during actual gameplay. Some even reported that staying too long on the map screen throws up an overheating warning.

It is not yet clear why only the map screen throws up the error. Potential causes include an uncapped framerate or a memory leak while accessing the map.

The problem looks to affect the base PS5 primarily. PS5 Pro users have not reported any warnings but have noted increased fan noise levels and higher temperatures.

A recent 1.04 patch released without any changelog does not appear to fix the problem. If you are affected by this bug, the only solution is to wait for Kojima Productions to acknowledge the problem and release a new patch.
