If you're into extraction games but want a break from the typical shooter vibe, this fantasy adventure set in a WoW-like world might be just what you need – Legacy: Steel & Sorcery is free to play this weekend.

Legacy: Steel & Sorcery is a third-person action RPG with PvPvE elements, set in the fantasy realm of Mithrigarde – and yes, it gives off strong World of Warcraft vibes. That’s no coincidence, since it was created by former WoW developers. Unlike traditional RPGs with linear storylines, this game leans into a player-driven experience inspired by extraction titles. Think Escape from Tarkov, but in a fantasy world and from a third-person view. Players venture out on raids, battle monsters and rival adventurers, gather gear and resources, then decide when to return to the safety of town – or risk everything for more.

You can play solo or team up with up to three others, though working together often gives you an edge. There are four distinct classes to choose from – warrior, priest, mage and rogue – each offering unique skills and playstyles. As you progress, you can level up your character, unlock new abilities and upgrade your personal quarters. Building reputation with merchants also grants access to better gear. Combat is fast and hands-on, with dodging, blocking, sprinting, striking and spellcasting all part of the mix. The environment adds extra depth too – warriors can smash through walls, while priests glide over hazards.

Reviews: Strong PvPvE foundation, but balance issues hold it back

Developed by Notorious Studios, Legacy: Steel & Sorcery entered Early Access in February 2025, where it’s expected to stay for at least a year. Since then, around 2,500 Steam users have reviewed the game, with 69% leaving positive feedback. Players highlight the fresh take on the PvPvE formula and the rich, WoW-inspired fantasy setting. The developers’ dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed either – frequent updates and quick bug fixes have given the community confidence in the game’s ongoing development.

The mixed reception stems not only from technical issues, but also from concerns about class balance. Rogues, in particular, are considered overpowered, often dominating PvP encounters with stun locks and stealth. Progression can feel grind-heavy and frustrating, with newcomers struggling to keep up due to the absence of catch-up systems. Solo players also face an uphill battle, as the game clearly favors team-based play. Still, with the action RPG free to try this weekend, it's a good chance to jump in and see for yourself – some of the rough edges might be easier to overlook.

Free weekend on Steam

Legacy: Steel & Sorcery usually sells for around $25. From May 16 to 19, you can try the action RPG for free. If it clicks with you, it's available at a 25% discount until May 22, bringing the price down to about $19.

By the way: If you're in the mood for some meditative relaxation this weekend, there's also a free construction simulator with a sandbox mode available on Steam.
