DPReview lives on under Gear Patrol umbrella, to continue operations as normal ↺
In a bit of a positive twist to an otherwise upsetting series of events, DPReview recently announced that it has been purchased by Gear Patrol. While acquisitions are usually received with some scrutiny, it's safe to say that most fans of DPReview will feel some relief, despite there being lingering questions about the future direction of the site.
It has been a tumultuous few months for DPReview readers and avid photography fans after it was announced that its parent company, Amazon, would be shutting down the popular photography news and reviews site, and the DPReview forum along with it. While a plan was later hatched to keep DPReview's content up as an archival knowledge-base of sorts for photographers and shoppers to refer back to, the site was to cease publication of new content after the archiving plan was put into effect.
The DPReview TV YouTube channel also seems to benefit from the acquisition, although the usual presenters, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake have already moved over to the PetaPixel YouTube channel to host videos there.
Thanks to the acquisition by Gear Patrol, though, DPReview will be able to continue producing content, although it's unclear whether there will be changes to the content strategy going forward. According to the announcement of the acquisition, things will go on as before, but the new venture may need to adapt to changes in the online publication landscape as situations arise.
I want to reassure you that we remain firmly committed to what makes DPReview great: the best camera reviews in the business, industry-leading photography news and features, and one of the most active photography communities anywhere on the internet. - DPReview General Manager, Scott Everett
