DOOM 64, originally released as a variant of the popular shooter for the Nintendo 64, is now free over at the Epic Games Store. The PC release has updated visuals, support for mouse and keyboard input, and more.

DOOM is, without a doubt, one of the most popular first-person shooter (FPS) franchises in the gaming world. The original DOOM has been ported to everything from consoles to printers to cash machines, but one port stands out in the sea of shooters. DOOM 64 is a unique take on the original FPS game tailor-made for the Nintendo 64, and now you can get it for free via the Epic Games Store.

DOOM 64 is not merely a port of the original DOOM, which was released for PCs in 1993. Rather, DOOM 64 is a standalone title in the franchise. It is notable for its different art direction and some unique weapons, including the introduction of the Unmaker (which made a later appearance in DOOM Eternal). DOOM 64 has a noticeably "grittier" and overall darker aesthetic than the PC versions.

While DOOM 64 was originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, it was ported to PC, the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch in 2020 (alongside the release of DOOM Eternal). The PC port offers upgraded visuals, widescreen support, mouse and keyboard input, and 60 frames per second gameplay. The PC release also includes the Lost Levels expansion, a set of additional levels.

While DOOM 64 isn't a bank-breaker at its normal price of US$4.99 on various distribution services, the Epic Games Store is offering it for free from now until August 25, 2022. It's a solid title that any FPS fan will appreciate.
